Moving into the middle of nowhere (England or Wales)?

Living "in the sticks" is so much more feasible these days with modern internet even without a car, providing you can still get supermarket deliveries plus Amazon etc.

Of UK places I've been to, I'd happily live somewhere near the Wiltshire/Somerset border like Warminster, nice sized town with train station plus the local countryside/lanes heading in the vague direction of the Mendips are lovely to cycle around using Longleat Center Parcs as a base. My mum retired to just outside Prestatyn a few months before covid began, you've got the train link between Holyhead and Chester along the north coast, but going inland to the mountains like near Denbigh are magical, Wales is a wonderful country but you have to accept lots of rain and far colder winters than down here in Hampshire!

I love being in the countryside, detached house, fast internet, large garden (although a mixed blessing as it's a lot of work!), 10-15min walk to a train that takes about 50mins to London. So quite a short commute despite being way outside the m25. It's quiet, low crime, lots of fields, and farms - but it's perfect for us as a family - we're not party animals so it suits us perfectly.

Hi all. Thank you all for the replies. I've gone through the thread but I can't reply to everything. Some interesting options.

As to the one bedroom thing I only said that because I assumed it would be much cheaper. I'd be happy with 2 beds (or more) as long as I could afford it.

Also when it comes to work I do computer programming so can do it anywhere as long as there is stable internet.

What about roles which require you to be in an office one day a week minimum ? are you happy commuting ? or would you be taking on fully remote only roles?

Scottish government had/have a push on rural broadband, I had a relative with a half mile drive and they installed fibre to the house.
I'm biased but I love Dumfries & Galloway.

There shouldn't be much of a problem getting supermarket deliveries, but Deliveroo etc will be next to none.
You'll need a car for everything and things hospital appointments could mean an hour drive.

This is an issue with living in remote or semi-remote places. If you ever need to go to the hospital for appointments and things as @nst68 mentioned, it will be quite difficult without a car and in remote or remote-ish places, there won't be much public transport to get you there.

My mention earlier of living in a small town that isn't super rural, but certainly still fairly quiet, does mostly come with that condition of needing to drive to further out things. However, it does have the limited public transport I mentioned, like the limited number of buses we get and the train station about a 45 min walk for me. All about finding that balance, which can be difficult.

Just remember there's a difference between isolation and solitude.

This sounds pretty reactionary and essentially "I hate people and want to be left alone".

I guess you are right and yes I would like to be away from people in general. I've just had a few bad experiences in the past so feel like being on my own would get rid of at least one problem.

You have to deal with the night shift animals in the countryside

Foxes which make the most sinister sounds. And nighttime birds which will scare the living crap out of you

Will you be ready for this ?
lol you make it sound like it is camping in the Masai Mara :D (i have done that once.... i highly recommend it, however uk countryside should not be considered scary ;) )

One of the houses I posted above is a few miles outside Lockerbie, quiet, remote, has full fibre. While I, in a Scottish new town, still can't get Openreach or altnet full fibre.

To those that are saying about internet in rural places you'd be surprised.

I live in teh middle of nowhere and get 500 fibre FFTP, I could have got 900 but decided I didnt need it.

I think it is a bit of a missconception as provided you are on some sort of main route, its a lot cheaper and easier to put the infrastruture in becauase you dont have to dig up 100 year old buildings etc.

Yup, foxes make scary sounds - until you realise it's just foxes ****ing (which you get in the middle of most cities and suburban areas anyway), at which point it's less scary, and more just annoying (but significantly less so than Wayne in his Golf with the pops & bangs map and baked bean tin exhaust doing his 18th lap of the estate that night).

Are you trying to move away from certain people or just people in general? I'm surrounded by neighbours but as nobody talks to anybody any more (suits me tbh) I might as well be in a house miles from anywhere.
I can absolutely understand where you are coming from though.

What type of experiences with people are you looking to get away from if you don't mind sharing?
Just general things. Hard to go into detail without sounding crazy. I like to avoid people and try to stay out of noise range. At the moment I wear noise cancelling headphones all the time but they don't fix things 100%. I also live in a shared house which is another thing I want to move away from but renting a flat round here is like £1k a month for a studio.

Near the coast its alright lots of nice weather for ducks :p but I remember living near Brecon inside the park but not that far off the heads of the valleys there was snow on the ground for a full day past May bank holiday :D v.cool lol

I can totally understand it though, in Yorkshire I had an absolute crazy hoe who played music all through the night at one side and her multiple scum boyfriends on the other side a drunken woman and her husband who would park badly on ours just to get a reaction, it was just not a nice place to live , so much better with less people around me now plus the benefits of a permanent holiday vibe in North Cornwall
