Moving into the middle of nowhere (England or Wales)?

Yeah I get it, I had nightmare neighbours like this when I used to live in St Albans. Hated living there, wasn't quiet at all.

So much better now that I've moved north a couple years ago to a small town/village. A very quiet area with countryside nearby. Neighbours are friendly and quiet.

Neighbours can literally ruin your life. I've been very lucky so far...

At the moment I wear noise cancelling headphones all the time but they don't fix things 100%. I also live in a shared house which is another thing I want to move away from but renting a flat round here is like £1k a month for a studio.

Highlighted the problem above. Your going from extreme to another here. Just getting your own place would sort this. There's no need to move into a cave in the mountains. ;)

True. Good point although as I said it is crazy expensive here so not sure if I could find anywhere near my family. Up north is much more reasonable price wise and also less densely populated.
 
when i divorced my ex wife i could not afford the bills or mortgage on my own. Despite at the time being a happy hermit i rented out a room in my house (it was a full house share i didnt lock them in a room ;) ) and i must admit despite having reservations it was a good thing to be honest and made sure i didnt become a recluse.

everyone is different i guess.... but part of it is having the right housemate.... tax free money as well. at the time iirc you could earn £4000 a year excluding bills and didnt have to fill in a tax return. (doesnt sound a lot now perhaps but it was 15-20 years ago so worth more back then)

Rather 3 awful neighbours 2 miles away than 50m away with a couple of houses in between
 
still seems very expensive like the lockerbie one misschief posted /anywhere in the UK (looked at something in Cumbria )
and as soon as you add in the sole cost of paying for utilities, not going to be a whole lot cheaper than the £1K house share, especially somewhere picturesque.
(Rents don't seem to vary as much as regional house prices ? )

You're better off stayimg that side of the border as Frome has become DFL central & house prices are crazy stupid. You could, of course, do worse than Castle Carey. Picturesque, mainline station, reasonably undiscovered & within reach of some outstanding countryside, including the Mendips.

Down by places like Hadspen is very picturesque (my parents are regular visitors to The Newt) - the general area is a strange bit of the country actually as there are lots of little hidden bits or isolated areas which feel completely out of character (in a good way) with the general surroundings like you've suddenly entered a different world for a few moments.

Hadspen House was on the verge of being bought by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I guess their marital problems put pay to that.

Yes, there are some interesting locations in the vicinity & if you head out on that little road that takes you into Dorset via Templecombe, you definitely enter another world - one which moves very, very slowly. I used to live near Stalbridge & they still have early closing there and a petrol station with attended pumps.

I heard (lol) Depp still bought it but might be wrong on that IIRC he ended up with a house somewhere in the Taunton direction instead, there are several famous actors with houses in the area though. I believe Sean Bean still owns a house near Maperton.

I heard it was bought by a S African businessman but, yes, Depp moved out towards Taunton.

There is a very big pile on the edge of Maperton - wonder if that's Bean's? You've also got a few in Bruton including Dominic West. Never seen any of these people - only person I did see on occasions was Kate Adie shopping in Sherborne - she lives in North Cadbury (of Camelot Castle fame).

Ford Rangers are absolute junk :D Good to know celebs will be suffering with those heaps....although I guess they have 'people' to deal with the never-ending maintenance :P

Around where I live a lot of people own pickups - you'll rarely see a Ford Ranger where people are actually using the pickup for whatever that is worth.
