NFL 2024 season

Wow. I'd heard something like this was coming, but wow... Also, kinda happy as a Commanders fan.

**EDIT** Mind you, the last time the Cowboys sent a major valuable player for multiple first round picks, is set them up for quite a run.

Yea, it's always hard to evaluate the winners/losers of a trade like this. It will change both teams and have a massive impact, but if GB can get closer/win a SB and the Cowboys can use those picks then both sides potentially win; i.e. the Stafford trade. I think in reality in makes sense for both, particularly if the player relationship was beyond repair, or crucially Dallas knew the maths wasn't with them. With the benefit of hindsight it does feel like the whole Cowboys media circus this last week was to help force the trade and ride that PR-train.

The Khalil Mack trade has been brought up several times as it's nearly a carbon copy, but it's hard to look back on that as a good, or bad trade given that the Bears soon went backwards and the Raiders never did anything of note with the picks. However I do admire organisations that roll the dice. Sometimes you have to. Although I am glad the Bears were never in the running this time, albeit a bit irritating Parsons has landed in an already stacked division.

And more news; NFL: Sky Sports to show more games than ever as part of new three-year deal . The extra 6pm & 9pm games sound great.

Summary of New deal

Extra game at 6pm Sunday

An extra 1-2 games in 9pm Sunday slot

All European games shown live on Sky Sports

Every Thursday, Sunday and Monday Night Football

NFL RedZone

Three Thanksgiving Games

Every minute of the playoffs, the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl LX

Indeed, bring it on. Actually watched some of the build up this year, before the new RZ format. So many games to choose from.

Well I have know idea how to describe what just happened in Buffalo.

Baltimore were cruising and somehow blew it.

Thousands of fans had left and thousands came back.

Josh Allen is indeed superman, as it Lamar. King Henry had won it for the Ravens and then lost it and whatever anyone said about Baltimore having the defense to win the Superbowl needs to have a re think.

What a opening weekend.

I wish I'd stayed up to watch it, stupid work getting in the way. Managed to find the highlights tonight, but knowing the outcome, it didn't have the same effect.

Da Bears!

Watching and enjoying the game tonight (well so far, one drive in). Very good opening weekend of games. Even though it's week one you can potentially see who's very good, and not so good already.

MNF is odd on Sky, pauses of nothingness.

And that was sloppy. Injuries already and could be a long season.

I just watched the highlights on YouTube of last night (YT seem to have upped their game, 20+ mins of highlights). It's hard to tell from just highlights as you don't necessarily see the bad bits, but both QB's looked pretty good to me and both teams might have a bright future.

I was happy with the Commanders, I wasn't expecting our D to be so strong (although it was only the Giants) and also thought our O Line did a fantastic job against what some people were saying is the best D Line in the league!

I think it was a tough week for most young QBs.

That said JJ McCarthy basically outgunned Caleb. On his turf in JJ's first NFL game. That's pretty embarrassing. It wasn't all good for JJM; the Pick 6 was ugly, being pressured really badly for the first 3 quarters and he looked lost in the first half. As they said in the commentary everything looked too fast for him. Where as Caleb went the other way. Started well, did some nice pocket presence and then started falling off a cliff. The number of ugly, over the top throws was worrying.

Week one and all that, but I'll be honest atm I'm just not sure on Caleb. Some red flags and he is making the same basic mistakes as year one (i.e. missing open receivers, often inaccurate and doesn't take any long shots - I don't know if this is a coaching thing, or just take the check down). I think he really is going to have to improve if he has any chance of getting 'the bag' at the end of year 3. Perhaps the only thing that was better was he was getting the ball out quicker, but sometimes too quick and throwing torpedos at Kmet and co.

Week one is often messy for the Bears, but this really feels like the 'I'm tired boss' meme. Some of the same old problems and cycles. Bring on week two.

Commanders had a great start, even if everything wasn't perfect (Danny Dimes, or GB had that!). If the Giants keep that up then Dart will start soon, which tbf was always likely.

Just watched the Bears highlights and seemed a good game, but looks like we didn't go on many long drives in the 2nd half as it always seemed to be the Vikings with the ball, so we must have turned it over quite a bit.
Never great to lose your opener, especially at home, but hopefully (use that word a lot with the Bears) we can step it up a gear as the division is a really tough one.

There was one fairly long drive that went for nearly 6mins in the 3rd-4th QTR but amounted to nothing due to 3 penalties that doomed the drive and then we missed the FG. We did dominate TOP at one point.

Some of the play-by-play analysis of the offense is starting to emerge. I'm not going to watch it all but unfortunately it seems Caleb missed more than first thought. How much this is him, the new system, lack of confidence I don't know. But it isn't pretty.

Williams has a serious issue with over throwing it. Can't recall a QB having so many over throws than him.

If there were any good games this weekend, I wouldn't know. I ended up turning the Bears/Lions game off in the third-quarter. Tried to watch some RZ but wasn't in the mood. It's quite plausible we are going into our early bye week, 0-4! Eek.

Absolutely crazy start to the season! Can’t seem to pick the results. Fantasy team underperformed considerably this week. In hindsight should have benched the superbowl winning QB for a rookie (Hurts for Jones)

The Giants Cowboys game was one of the most amazing games I've seen in some time...

eg With a play available to them, and the Cowboys ran off tackle to shorten the FG try to just 64 yards WT actual F...

Some great games this week.

Having started watching the NFL in the late 80`s, The long field goals got me thinking....
With the kick off rule changes, and a lot of drives now starting at the 30 yard line with a touchback, I feel its become much easier for a team who needs a last ditch field goal to go on and win the game.
From a typical kickoff, A team would only need to travel 23 yards to get into Aubrey`s Kicking range, or 30 yards to get into a lot of kickers range. Back in the day, it would be at least double that, especially when starting from the 20.
I am all for progress, and making the game more entertaining, but maybe teams will now try and change tact, trying to be last to score, rather than trying to defend what is effectively a much, much shorter field.
Teams are all going to be clambering over themselves for good kickers. :D

The new overtime is an interesting one. When NY won and opted to defend, I was initially surprised. I thought 'yes, but if you both score a TD (which looked likely given the previous 10 mins of play) then it's next team to score wins, and Dallas would have the ball', but then the commentater pointed out, you would know what you're chasing and I guess you could ensure, one way or another (if they scored a FG or a TD) that there would be no third possession. Eg if they kick a FG, you go all or nothing for a TD. If they score a TD, you score a TD and go for 2 points. If they get 3 and you're then 4th and Goal on their 30yrd line, I guess you would still kick the FG and play D and hope, so I understand playing D first I guess. Most scenarious it's the better option.

Not sure I've witnessed a crazier ending in so many of the 6pm games for a long time.

Some good games and that Rams@Eagles felt like an early clash that could happen again. Also some surprising score lines though.

Glad to say from a Bears perspective a much better week. Phew. Dallas struggled to hold our offense, but everything that went wrong did. They lost too many of their stars.
