The state of games.

I appreciated his negative review of Starwars Outlaws. I love Starwars so would probably have bought it if he hadn't highlighted how crap the combat was. It was hilarious too!

I've been watching him for years and he does champion some great lesser known (but great) games. I've found more than a few through his reviews which never get spoken about here (currently playing through "Viewfinder" which is a recommendation of his from a while back).

Even if you disagree with his schtick, he is at least consistent in his review criteria, so you can judge yourself if the game in question will appeal to you.

It always made me laugh back when you could look at his Steam profile and see how long he had played the games he "reviewed", and the vast majority had like 5-10 minutes tops, for his 10-15 minute "review". One day you stopped being able to see his play stats and I don't know if he sussed people could see that, or whether Steam disabled it, but it was obvious how he just barely even skimmed past the first 5 minutes of games. And this was before Steam refunds so you couldn't argue he was just doing that. Just another shouty, ranty youtuber, got his core audience now and is living off the Patreon.

I think I've subbed and then unsubbed from WAB about 6 times by this point lol. His opinions can be very annoying to say the least. I think the last time I unsubbed was because he made a video which was about 20 minutes long where he ranted about why using WSAD is a terrible keyboard layout.

Anyway, I agree with the general concept that AAA games in particular are usually uninspired, copy/paste fests. Some of his reasoning in this video though is baffling lol. They're not even complaints about modern AAA games. It just seems to be him complaining about his preferences. You don't like 3rd person? Ok?

People still fall for his act? He plays to his audience. He's an insufferable berk who spits his dummy out when called out.

Give him a free key for an Indie and it's one of the best games of the year.

AAA where he doesn't get keys and they're awful.

On top of being an absolute clown, he's also a terrible gamer and it effects his reviews.

Sounds like he disliked one of your favourite games, which AAA title was it exactly? One of the CoD or BF's? :p

I don't really think there is anything wrong with 3rd person either really, depends on the game BUT I think he's referring to games where they could have been better but theywent with 3rd person to sell skins and such.

I would just like to highlight, before we lay the blame for that at the games companies, that (much as with drugs and other such things), its supply and demand, the fault for skins doesnt lie at the feet of the game companies, the fault for skins lies at the feet of the people who keep buying them. I blame them for methods of selling skins rather than the game companies.

His "Best Game of 2024" was Space Marine 2 (along with Empires of the Undergrowth (top game BTW), which is a 3rd person shooter, so I think you're onto something there.

It's not so bad when it's an game set in a big open space where cover doesn't really mean much, like like Space Marine. But when it's something set inside buildings (where the camera angle becomes really annoying) or a stealth type of game it's dumb.

Vermintide wouldn't have been anywhere near as good as a 3rd person game though.

I think is new review of borderlands 4 really shows he's not all doom and gloom, despite the negative reviews it's been getting over performance, he had a relatively good time with it, and the coop seems fun. not my cup of tea personally but it's the easiest target to just take a dump on right now due to the negativity, and he didn't jump on that bandwagon.

I think Mac makes some excellent points in this video.

I really agree with a lot of his points, not all but something needs to be done about some things in gaming which I think are really ruining gaming for me.

I've been having trouble for a while now finding games that interest me and I think Mac had made me realise the problem, it is for me too things like hand holding, the wall hack, no real thought or intrigue in characters or how they present a world in which I'm supposed to lose myself. Ai / well moreso NPC behaviour somehow has gotten terrible when we had games 20 years ago that had it done well.

I was thinking maybe it's because I've been gaming consistently for 40 years and maybe have seen it all but I don't think that is it.

Listen to what he says and I'd love to see anyone here disagree with his points.

oh, and BAN PREORDERS!!! JFC

issue is cost to make games
Once that and risk is combined decision making is affected and so will the design and product be.
Its why games are usually more similar than different

Maybe its due to a lot of them using the same game engine Unreal 5.

So they all 'look' the same and feel the same?

Whilst I agree, UE5 is ****, and dev's are being lazy, when others such as Naughty Dog, prove that you can make a stable, beautiful game engine, and a great game...

I would disagree regarding the samey factor? Until Dawn, certainly doesn't play, look, nor feel like any other UE5 game - the same can be said for Cronos: The New Dawn, MGS Delta, or Silent Hill 2 Remake, feeling like STALKER2... So it is possible to retain a uniqueness across a variety of games/genres :)
