**** The Official Apple September Event thread - Tuesday 9th September 2025 @ 18:00 BST ****

The fact that USB2 is a feature on any device in 2025 is a joke in itself...

I haven’t plugged an iPhone into a computer for about 5 years. I suspect many people don’t need to.

Pro model I can see the need, what with the camera use and RAW files.

The more I think about this the more I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to upgrade either my original AW Ultra or my 3 year old iPhone.

There is literally nothing new that would make any difference to 99.9% of users.

As per usual it's a load of flash marketing gimmick yet it feels like people are fatigued now. What's worse is there genuinely used to be big improvements in stuff like the camera but now it's just trying to sell you features you don't even need (who needs satellite messaging unless you're taking clients up the Himalayas). The selling point of the the new Pro is, what, the camera? The iPhone still sucks compared to proper cameras but for about 5 years now it has been more than good enough for 99.9% of people to capture important life moments.

Also what is it with the obsession with thin products... who actually wants that Air?

I guess I'm just disappointed with Apple. It would have been nice to see the AW Ultra in a new design or some actual advancements in health features (sleep tracker LOL most people would be better off to ignore this nonsense and judge their sleep on how they feel waking up).

That's really just making excuses for **** poor design choices.

I don't agree.

Yes USB2 is silly on a new phone, but I also can't remember the last time I plugged my phone in to transfer any data. I see it as a complete non-issue, as will the vast, vast majority of people on the planet with an iPhone (they probably don't even know the difference).

Well you continue sipping the Kool-Aid and we can agree to disagree.

I mean it has WiFi 7 which has a theoretical max speed of 46Gbps. It should certainly be able to handle 10Gbps as a conservative estimate which should be fast enough to transfer large video files.

Was expecting a little more from the 17pro design wise, its been the same basic phone design since the iPhone 12. Ive got a 14pro, so will look out for a used 16pro rather than go for a 17, the only thing i really want is the USBC charging port.

Does it not impact usb charging speed?
No.

It’s not really though is it?

Go and ask anyone you know with an iPhone non-pro (and those with a pro who aren’t YouTubers in reality) and ask them when the last time they plugged it into a computer to transfer data.

99/100 will say ‘the last time iTunes was required to activate the phone’.

That was at least a good 10 years ago.

Is it about money saving, yes of course, saving 10p on licensing when you are producing 10’s of millions of devices suddenly adds up to a lot of money.

But it’s one of those money saving things that has almost zero impact on the end user because almost no one uses the feature.

I can’t even remember the last time I plugged mine into a computer. I’d need to go back to iPhone 6 era phones at the very latest

TBF the main reason I asked was because I thought it made the charging speed slower. That would explain why everyone was quick to let me know that they don't transfer stuff.
In which case I agree yes less of an issue, so coolaid comment was unnecessary, apologies @squerble I'll blame on just woke up.

One of the big benefits of the USB standard is all its elements are effectively flexible this means people can select which ever relevant bits from the spec to implement on their device.

At the same time it’s the worst part of the USB spec. Not all USB C ports (and cables) are created equally and no one has a clue what the capability of any given USB port (and cable) is so it creates a pretty terrible user experience.

Didn't know any of that, thanks! I've had this myself where one cable will fast charge my phone and another won't. I spend a bit extra now and get Ugreen stuff which I find very reliable, and they don't seem to fall apart as quickly as others.
My MBA has the magsafe thing but I don't use it as that would take up a slot in my multi charger thing, makes more sense having plain ol' usb c as everything I have uses that now.

Cables are a nightmare, more so than the ports and all the same issues apply.

Cables also need to support both the power and transfer speeds and if they don’t, they only operate at the lower or default minimum speed (USB2 and 5V 1A).

What makes cables a nightmare is the manufacturers don’t label them with their capabilities so once it’s out of the box, you’ve got no idea what they can do.

Likewise a lot of cheap cables don’t meet the specifications they allege they can do.

At least with the ports you can usually look up what they are on the internet from the devices product page.

I was looking at upgrading the ultra 2, but definitely doesn’t seem worth the £500 after trade in. Think I’ll just buy the nice new neon green strap.

Now to decide air or pro max.

I cancelled my S11 preorder this morning.

Reading a few Reddit threads, it looks like Apple have fudged the numbers on the increased battery life, the flick gesture is working on S10s with the wOS 26 beta, and given my stance on phone screen protectors, I don’t believe the hype of ‘twice as scratch resistant’.

So I’m weighing up my options but I’ll probably get an S10 and save a few pennies. Or maybe I will go down the Garmin route…

Presume this is Barclays 0%? Is it possible to see trade in value and new price per month without an actual finance application?
Yeah just go to purchase the phone and it will offer a trade in price and show the monthly payments before any sort of finance agreement is decided.

£495 for my 15 PM 512GB, £64 remaining on the loan and new 512GB PM would be £45 a month.

Think I'll just keep the current phone and enjoy £0 per month as there's only one payment left. Might get a M4 Air to replace my M1 Pro.
