To Polo GTI or not to Polo GTI. That is the question?

The Polo GTI sits in a weird place in the market in my opinion. It's priced too high to be a reasonable contender against it's competitors and is also the most boring in it's bracket. There's also a very short gap between a new Polo GTI and an approved used low-miler Golf GTI.

With that said, and hypocritically: people always have an opinion of how better to spend your money. If you really want it and can't think of anything better to spend the money on, then go for it.

Hated my Polo GTI. DSG was meh. Too slow in normal and then too revvy in sport. No happy medium. And the lovely moo'ing brakes when reversing as well. This was on a 2019 model.

If only it had Flappy Paddles… :p

They had a fix for the moo’ing brakes in reverse, they fitted some small weights which stopped this free of charge.

Was that the older six speed or the facelift seven speed?
I want to say 7 speed. DQ200?

2019 - It would have been a 6 Speed DSG - DQ250.

Yes, there could be a number of things, throttle response together with a bit of turbo lag, but the gearbox being slow could be fixed by using the paddles.

The seven speed might be a bit more responsive?

All of the VAG cars seem to be like that. I passed over VWs years ago because of it, but I tried an S5 recently and that had a lathargic throttle too. Lots of horses but you have to wait for them to wake up.

:p I know I know.... But I didn't want to always use paddles. To me it was a basic thing that the gearbox was just crap at. Either wrong gear for going up inclines and felt laboured, or too aggressive in sport. Lol.

The small weights is interesting as I took the car to VW at the time and they said nothing could be done. Grr.

Totally unrelated but when I bought the car the outlet hose on intercooler wasnt attached. Car was going in limp mode if given any boost. Called the VW breakdown guys who were ace, and they did a thorough check and spotted it.

Thanks for confirming it was DQ250. I wasn't sure.

Yeah, to be fair I know what you mean it did have a few quirks but most Automatic Box’s are the same, programmed for longevity, efficiency and emissions.

But with an enthusiastic foot even in Normal I found it pretty nippy and eager.

I do know what you mean, something in between Normal and Sport would have been perfect, If I re-call correctly Throttle Response could be set to Sport.

Yeah, I was embarrassed of turning heads for the wrong reasons when reversing

It went in and came out with Rear Brake Weights/Dampers which solved the noise completely.

In response to OP - These are now, what 28-30k new? That would be a little much for me for a Polo GTI.

Have you had a look at Used Approved ones? I’d imagine Near New ones are £10,000 less.

My Ownership ended up costing around £100 a month in depreciation and It only had 4500 miles on when I bought it.

100% about the throttle. Tbh it may have been more noticeable to me because I'm quite light footed with throttle. AHH thanks for the pic that looks like a mad solution. Wish VW had done that for me! :)

Just looked at the configurator for these 35k for a polo specced up to anything decent  obviously there would be discount but jesus christ.

My Polo GTi was 168 quid a month and i think 1k down. That is why I had one as the value for a station car / run about was great. It was ok, went well but not that dynamic or special but same applies to the Golf really but i’d take a nearly new Golf over the Polo.

Yea crazy. An electric Abarth 500 is ******* 30k+ now and it's basically got the same interior it always had! And it's slower than the petrol ones.

Power and boost by gear factory map  I hate it. Pretty much all cars do it now, N/A or FI. I'm pretty sure that most of these flash maps, are just that disabled, and then you have the full range and think it's made more power that stock - well you do as it wont be limited, but you get what I mean, you're actually getting the power it's supposed to have at full range, and not strangled till the OEM says you can have it :P

Most likely done to control emissions stats. A lot of cars you'll notice are right on the limit of the tax bracket. Luckily when you undo it, no one checks.

Yep! The difference from an automatic to a manual can be insane tax wise due to this, autos tend to run leaner just before the gear change and let off throttle earlier.
We've noticed this when manual swapping cars when comparing the maps.
