Morning all,
I have recently switched over to AMD after being an NVIDIA user for approx 10 years.
I have got myself a 9070, Im still getting used to all the new AMD terminology but can anyone advise of any "must do" tweaks or settings that i should apply system wide before gaming.?
I have ensured REBAR is enabled, although i have seen mixed reports on the potentil performance gains/loses.
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Uninstalled all NVIDIA related software drivers etc before pulling the old card out, then installed adrenaline.DDU to remove Nvidia drivers, install AMD drivers.
Try an undervolt
Ooh ill look into the undervolt thanks.DDU to remove Nvidia drivers, install AMD drivers.
Try an undervolt
Knew there was something I forgot to do!No, just use it....![]()
How are you getting on with the card?I've just installed the Pulse XT.
It's easily the largest graphics card I've ever owned and completely dwarfs the 3070FE, yet it doesn't feel as heavy as I was expecting.
In fact, it seems quite light. I don't think it needs the support that comes with it, but maybe I'll add it in as a precaution later on.
I've only had time so far to just fire it up, tinker with some software and briefly try one game, but all seems good so far.
Admittedly, the side panel of the case is off at the minute, but even so, I'm surprised by how cool it's running: 24-26 C.
Running it 'out of the box' at the present, but will probably apply an undervolt, etc., later.
It's nice to finally have a card with a decent amount of VRAM.
I haven't spent a lot of time gaming with it at all yet, well, nothing demanding anyway. But, regardless, the experience has been solid overall. How are you getting on with the card?
Also, interested if you do undervolt / overclock as I have the same card bought around the same time.
Cool(!).I haven't spent a lot of time gaming with it at all yet, well, nothing demanding anyway. But, regardless, the experience has been solid overall.
About the most intensive game that I tried out was Black Mesa, it was an easy one to quickly check as I'm currently playing through it.
I only played for a few minutes at most and although it ran fairly well, I did notice a rubber-banding effect which I believe indicates that the CPU is underpowered for the GPU (which was to be expected).
To get a more well-rounded experience, I need to put it through a wider range of games and benchmarks.
Indeed, before I purchased it, I was weighing up whether to stick with AM4 and drop in a 5950X to compliment the new card, or jump to AM5 and plumb for something in the 9000 series.
If truth be told, I'm still not sure. On one hand, the easy option is just to stick with AM4 and wait until AM6 (or Intel's next desktop range) is released, and then overhaul the guts of the system.
The other, would be to move to AM5 and get a 9000 series processor, which, I think, makes more sense, but requires more effort.
I did also dabble with a little video editing, nothing demanding, just some gameplay/transitions/effects.
Again, for the most part it was good, though the bottleneck would seem to be evident there, too.
I haven't yet tried applying an undervolt, but at some point quite soon I will look up a tutorial on YT how to go about doing that.
Interestingly, I saw this message in the Adrenaline software:
CSM detected. AMD software has detected that your system BIOS is currently operating in CSM (compatibility support module) mode. This mode is unsupported by your AMD graphics card.
I still can't quite get over how cool it runs; it idles between 24 - 26C (case side panel now back on), with the highest temp I've noticed being 39C when under stress (albeit a light workload).
I would say the 3070FE was possibly a little quieter running, but if so, only very slightly. That may be another thing I tinker with.
Well, time to install some games (need more storage... 1TB doesn't cut it at all).
I might reinstall Stalker 2 next, as I already tried that out with the last GPU, so it should make for an interesting comparison.
How's your experience so far?![]()
Good to hear.Cool(!).
Yep really enjoying the card so far.
Been playing GTA5 Enhanced, mostly to tinker with Ray Tracing, Global Illumination and that. Although it's a game that I seem to be spending a lot of time on now, still lots of fun to this day...
Also Dying Light 2, again cranked up. Visually stunning that one.
I'm in a similar position with AM4 and I use a 5600. I know it's limiting it a tad. But not to the point really where I think I need to upgrade as such (yet, as I think games are becoming more CPU intensive / less optimisation going on).
So will upgrade when I feel like I need to, or if there are any bargains that pop-up re AM5.
Re temps, all good. I swapped out the Wraith and stuck in a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE Black CPU Air Cooler which is a beast of a cooler! (the 5600 + Wraith were not "happy" when I put in the 9070XT...).
The Wraith and the 6700 both made a fair bit of noise also.
It's actually kind of odd now. As in when I start the machine up, until I play any sort of game it runs silent. I can't say I have even run a silent machine before. So yep, all good.
Re gaming, I look forward to it now rather than scroll through my Steam library and play a bit here and there. So I am really enjoying it tbf.
Also looking forward to putting some demanding VR games through it.
All good here. I will stick an undervolt on it next weekend and do some tinkering I think![]()
I was going to get the Assassin but from what I read, the Phantom is the newer model.Good to hear.
IIRC, the 5600 will likely be a little smoother where gaming is concerned, delivering better minimum frames.
I'm also using the Wraith Prism for the CPU, though for a long while I was using the Noctua DH-14.
It was very good, but I eventually swapped it for the stock cooler just to free up some room.
I'm very tempted to look into a low-profile CPU cooler, which should be better than the Wraith but take up less room than the Noctua.
However, that said, I may end up reverting to a tower cooler once again... maybe one of the Thermalright range.
I don't know if it still is, but I think the Peerless Assassin was seemingly all the rage at one point.
Enjoy.![]()
