General Headphone Audio

The differences are small but its brighter than I expected based on what the AKM DACs were described as and in direct comparison to my old ESS based one. Not really an issue as its got the built-in peq and its probably exacerbated by the hifiman headphones.

Understood. I suspect it's not the end of the world for my setup, particularly how I would be using with a Tube setup for music. That said I would like to see some more reviews come through on the K15 (and the K13 R2R). But some of these audio products don't exactly have co-ordinated releases when it comes to the slow drip of reviews for certain products.

So whathifi has started what I predicted might happen, the flames have already been lit!

"Many people out there, like me, will rightly be a little peeved that Spotify has shirked streaming support above 24-bit/44.1kHz, because they do have audio systems that are mature enough to reveal the extra details in the highest-quality music offered by those rival streaming services"

Sure you do pal, keep telling yourself that.
I'm sure he can hear the difference imediately and could easily point it out using some flowery words to describe it.

So I got my Dunu accessory pack today, along with the free IEMs. The cable is very nice, and it has a removable end connector to switch between 3.5 and 4.4mm. Lots of tips, including their candy and S&S tips, I've found I prefer the S&S ones, so having another set is a bonus. The carrycase is nice. It also comes with a clip and a cleaning brush.

As for the sound, they sound suprisingly neutral. I think they're in and around the Hexa/Pure price bracket, although I think those have a slight edge performance wise. Totally non-fatiguing. Also metal shells, so likely good for taking places where you need some durability.

Edit: to clarify, I think the truthear iems are slightly better than the titan S2.

Now what then?!

Yeah, all these audiophile sphere headphones come with a 1.4m cable, whereas I found the more bigger brands, the studio headphones tend to come with longer cables. I guess it's the target audience that people for audiophiles or even gaming headsets sits at their desk with the socket within an arm's reach, whereas the DT770's natural environment would be like a studio where the jack for the console could be further away.
I hadn't thought of that, but what you say makes sense. :)

I think I'll also pick up a cheap but decent 2nd pair that I can use a little more rigorously, e.g. when drifting off to sleep,
as it would be a shame to use the FT1's for that. Maybe the SRH440A-EFS's might be a good option.

You can get extension cables if you need to, I have a 1.2m one.

Last minute realisation today that the K13 R2R does not have XLR4 for headphones, which meant I would only be able to use the LCD-5 via single ended which is pointless, doubly since Audeze in their infinite wisdom only give a clunky XLR cable with the headphones and an XLR to quarter inch adapter... So £20 on an adapter to convert to 4.4mm had to be spent.

At least it's good quality, same Neutrik connector as on the stock cable and adapter and made by Geekria on Amazon.

Can you imagine spending over £4k on headphones and then having to fork out more cash on adapters because everything you need isn't in the box...

The XLR front ports is what I look for now when I see an amp.

What is your listening percentage split between the HE1000 and the LCD5?

With the X9 it's probably 80 HE and 20 LCD5. Because I'm on Spotify a lot I get shown new music that sounds awesome so I want to naturally hear what it's like on the LCD, then I get sad when it doesn't sound as nice as on the HE1000se so go back to that

I am hoping the R2R changes that ratio.

Why would using the single ended port be pointles?
I think from context, he means that having a single ended termination means that it can't be converted into balanced via an adaptor, unlike a balanced cable, which can be turned into a single ended.

I think it relies just as much on implementation as it does the dac chips themselves. My old ESS dac is definitely warmer and less analytical/sterile than my new AKM-based DAC. Although a lot of cheaper options and chifi is just kind of chip in a box with no extra design into what goes around it so they are likely just straight up the signature of the dac chip I guess.

Something I forgot with my post - most of my ESS based audio systems have LM4562, or sometimes the higher spec LME variants, opamps which tend to exacerbate the bright and sterile nature, with other opamps the signature can be a bit different - OPA1612 makes it a bit more pleasing and if you've got some of the older audio opamps like the OPA2132 or NE5532 it can sound a bit warmer.
