Simple stress test

All agreed, but the blank display was happening after just a minute or so of very undemanding games, such as Prodeus. The PC itself hadn't frozen, it just stopped outputting a display. I could still hear the audio that said that the game was continuing behind the darkness. The onboard graphics (Intel UHD Graphics 630) seems to behave, hence why my first port-of-call is to check the GTX 1080. If I don't find an issue with the card, I'll start looking elsewhere.

HWINFO is very good at monitoring everything across the system, including GPU hot spots & junction temps. Very handy if you're trying to diagnose or check what's running within spec.

Well, the various stress tests seemed to all pass wihout fail, the temps of the card remaining low and no crashes. Some games would play fine, others (not particularly demanding ones) would cause a crash. I tried a deep-clean of the drivers and various other things, none of which made any difference.

Finally, I tried a different graphics card from one of my other computers (4070 Super) and the crashes all stopped, so I have to assume the 1080 has developed a strange fault.

Doesn't help for this case, but the amd adrenaline software has a built-in stress test you can get to from the tuning tab. Just mentioning it in case someone else comes looking for suggestions

So, the Event Viewer shows 21 occurences of event ID: 14, source: nvlddmkm.

A quick Google does indeed suggest that this is related to graphics (Nvidia...?) cards, but there is no simple solution that's worked for everyone.

A search on these forums shows others with similar problems, one with the exact issue I've got.

I've seen a suggestion somewhere that it might be related to recent drivers and to try older ones, so that might be my next avenue. Nvidia themselves only show drivers as old as March 2025, I'll look for drivers from last year.

Interestingly, one of the top results on google for nvidia drivers is "nvidia drivers november 2024" so I might be onto something...

Out of curiosity do they not do the 3d mark scores threads on here anymore? I lost my account and haven't been around for a while.

It seems to have been as simple as reverting to an older driver.

Thanks to Kirby Wurm for the Event Viewer suggestion, I was looking for a replacement card but the search is over.

If anyone comes across this looking for answers, I installed these drivers (566.14, Tue Nov 12 2024): https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/235904/

Glad you got that sorted!

Sometimes EV can be useful, in other instances no help at all (for example, I've had occasional crashes recently that I can attribute to an unstable GPU OC as they disappear when reverting to stock, but EV shows nothing).

didnt know there was one
i managed to get 7670 a couple of days ago with my 5900x/9070xt based rig not sure if thats bad or really bad or what lol

I've always used Furmak for this.

I have fond memories of running my old Radeon 7970 in Furmark for hours at a time as it would get up to 100C and heat my cold bedroom up very nicely lol.

the other morning it was really really cold in the small room the pc is in so i did just as you said lol whacked furmark on for 10/15 minutes and let my 9070xt warm the room up slightly
348 watts in a small room is enough to at least take the edge off of it i noticed lol

I do this in my bedroom... But only when playing a game in bed...

Can't be very efficient just benchmarking V's turning the central heating /radiator in the room up a bit?

Anyone done the maths?

If you're gaming anyway though it's 'free' heat lol
