General Headphone Audio

Tbh I think this thread and the gaming thread have kind of merged into the same thing. I wonder if there should be at least three separate threads with for headphone audio, speaker/AV setups and gaming audio (inc. console). But I think something along the lines of 'General Headphone Audio', or similar.

Audeze is still waving the CRBN2 to check out, meanwhile I am still trying to figure out how to get hold of an electrostatic amp to try them out with :o

Initial impressions pretty much what I expected really - gives desktop grade audio performance and functionality in a portable form factor, but there are better options for desktop grade audio. Detailed enough but low fatiguing sound which doesn't quite hit the level of subtle resolution/detail of higher end desktop DAC/AMPs - desktop mode also has a distinct difference in punch and detail. Very low noise - even my ultra sensitive Sony MDR-EX650APs which usually have a soft hiss or worse at idle on most devices are silent, though that may have been achieved at the expense of performance.

Potentially might pair up nicely with my Lenovo Legion Go.

Haven't tried my HD600s yet but I think it will struggle with them to be honest despite some formidable output power capability - it is only running with 5V which in my experience just isn't sufficient to really work those HD600 drivers.

EDIT: Re-tested the HD600s after realising I'd inadvertently switched it out of desktop mode when plugging them in - big increase in how punchy the sound is on them when in desktop mode rather than standard which sounds flat and inoffensive, but still doesn't quite get them working like some of the better setups I have, I'm actually pretty happy with it in desktop mode but I know they can do a bit better. Unfortunately I don't have a 4.4mm balanced cable for the 600s to test that.

Got the Dunu Titan today.

Tips for dayssssss, so many tips.
Cable is lovely.
Metal shell construction for the IEM.
Sounds quite close to the EW300.

I think I will use these at home with the 4.4mm out. Oh, these are really easy to drive, only using the Apply dongle DAC on the Mac and I am on the lowest volume setting out of the computer.

That cable looks chonky. Im looking for some daily IEMs for my ipod classic is this cable easy to wrap around an ipod or such to chuck it in pocket? Or am I a heathen for wanting to do that?

That cable is too thick to wrap around an ipod, but it also won't tangle.

For that you need a thinner cable and most of them do tangle unfortunately. The stock one for something like the Hexa would be fine for this use case, or the Kiwi Cadenza or Wan'er 2.

Don't know if this matters to anyone or not but you can output on both headphones ports at the same time on the K13 R2R.

Refurbished my Beyerdynamic Amiron Home. Needed toreplace the headband, as after almost 7 years of using it most days, the foam had started turning into dusty sludge if I poked it, and the band itself had also started to delaminate. Replaced the Pads as well.

Likely staying with it as my gaming headset, as it's by far the most comfy headphone I've ever worn, and can have them on all day.

^^Probably the finest sounding planars in the up to £550 range IMO.

The K13 R2R headphones output is rather excellent, very much so more than the K11 R2R the more I am listening to it with the HE1000se and even closer to the X9 than I first thought. The X9 still has a slight edge in soundstage and layering of instruments, but it's so slight now that I've listened through most of my playlist that it's hard to pick either apart. I'm running the K13 in OS mode for the slight edge in upper end sparkle which is more similar to the X9's output, both have EQ off otherwise.

I am intrigued to find out how good the new internal switch mode power supply is, if it is really clean and stable as FiiO claims, then a linear PSU will probably not make a noticeable difference, but if it leaves room for improvement, then it likely will. I suppose there is incentive for the engineers to do that as they can then sell you a similarly styled linear PSU to go with the K13, which is exactly what they are doing lol.

Another observation that came about mainly as I'm switching back and forth between amps and then changing output to pre to listen to my speakers is that the FiiO remote has dedicated output buttons so it's really easy to press PO for headphones or Pre for speakers. This means I can simply place the headphones on the desk and press one button to switch output. The X9's remote has no dedicated output button, only input, so you either have to unplug or touch the screen and manually switch to the rear output.

I mentioned this in my X9 review before but now that I'm using the FiiO remote the omission on the X9's remote is becoming an annoyance and the inclusion on the FiiO a convenience.

Bought a 4.4mm balanced cable for the HD600s to use with the QX13 but not really a huge difference, wasn't really expecting much, slightly improved soundstage pushing it away from the head more and a little bit smoother without loss of detail but still doesn't give them the performance they are capable of on other amps.
