***Sid Meier's Civilization VII***

I have played the Civ series for years, not picked the latest one up yet as everyone seems to be complaining about it... came in here today to see if its worth picking up yet, and this completely put me off :) Its a shame really, but I feel like the latest iterations of the game have been slowly going down hill... really had an itch to play a Civ or Civ like game, its really a shame :(

I think it's great :D

It seems to me like there aren't really other games like Civ. The genre has moved in the direction of grand strategy rather than 4X. I picked up Old World in the sales - so I've only played a few hours so take this with a pinch - and while I'm enjoying it, it feels like it's a different kind of game to Civ because so much of it is about managing individuals and successions and so on. It isn't like Crusader Kings, which feels to me more like an alternative history simulator than a 4X, but it's definitely heading in that direction, and it seems like all the other big games in the genre whether historic, sci-fi, or fantasy, are doing that.

Maybe that's just the slice of things I've played, but it seems like 4X is a dying genre.

I'm playing more hours of Civ6 each week than I have ever played of Civ7. I can't bring myself to turn it back on it was such a massive disappointment. I'm waiting a few years until the first major Upgrade and see if that makes it worth my while.

YouTube videos for Civ 7 with the usual players do not seem to be occurring that often, most seem to still do more civ 6 vids. Ive watched a few of the civ 7 vids and the game just confuses the hell out of me and doesnt look fun.

I think I’m waiting for this to be more complete before I play it again. I’m not sure about this model they are following by releasing a game as early access and things not being completed enough to fully enjoy it.

Fast becoming the industry standard, but people keep pre-ordering and buying oin release day, so this is what we get half-finished, poorly designed slop.

Whoever thought "eras" was a good idea should be fired on the spot, because they clearly do not understand the game or the players.

This absolute classic gaming 2025 -

"Well we want you to play this game, not the game you want to play"

"Well we're not going to play it"

"Well, you will because it says Civ on it, it's a Civ game"

"Well, we won't"

"Why arent you playing the game?"

"We told you we wouldn't"

"We hear you, and we're working hard to improve things"

"Too late though, we've moved on, and you can't/won't fix the core issue anyway"

Dead game.

Dev/Publisher blames players.

The new patch coming on the 20th looks like it will address some of the complaints about the age transition (details lacking):

Or, if you prefer a chatty version:

Feels like it is going to be a slow walk towards actually fixing transitions. They feel too much like you are playing a series of separate games and they really mess up wars.

Layoffs at Fireaxis among the Civ VII team have been announced by 2K. Not clear whether this is related to the poor reception of the game, or whether it is just the usual game industry nonsense.

Some other interesting bits in that article about a different UI having being abandoned not long before launch. Looks like they decided they had to make last minute changes, and then rushed it out half baked, and it shows.

I wouldnt necessarily read too much into layoffs, its pretty common once a game is out and deemed stable enough to lay off staff who worked on the game

That's not the pattern that Fireaxis has followed historically, though. But, yes, I agree it may not be related.

Is the price of the pc versiion tumbling like the ps5 deluxe version, which has dropped from ~£17 to under £12 this week?
