Morning all,

Following the suggested template - any advice appreciated!

Purchase Timeframe: Next 4 weeks

Budget: £1,000 - preferably less

Usage: Gaming - Call of Duty: Warzone & the new Battlefield Battle Royale specifically.

Preferences: Best performance uplift:price ratio ideally!

Current Hardware:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600x 6 core

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming

Geforce RTX 3070 (FE I think?)

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x 16GB) 3600MHz DDR4 RAM

-- Let me know if you need further info (PSU, Case, Cooling etc?)

Peripherals: N/A

Special Needs/Requirements (inc Wi-Fi): N/A

What resolution is your monitor? Make and model of the psu would be good as well. My first thought would be that if gaming is the main use of the pc drop a 5700x3d (or a 5800x3d if you can find one cheap enough second hand) in that motherboard and concentrate on the gpu for the bioggest uplift in performance.

A 5070ti will give you between 60 to 100% more FPS than your 3070 depending on game and start at round £650 otherwise the 9070xt is and alternative with simmlar performance but can be had for £580.

You then could go 5700x3d for CPU upgrade but I would see how the 5600x holds up.

Hi guys - had a baby since I posted this, so things got a bit hectic!

Just circling back - firstly, thanks for the suggestions. Secondly, someone mentioned it would be PSU dependant - the PSU I have is a Corsair 750W Fully Modular Power Supply.. would that be comfortable running a 5700x3d and a 9070xt or 5070ti?

TIA

Ian

congrats!
(though do you really still have the time to game lol  )

which exact model and how old?
in general, it should be fine

Thanks @tamzzy - appreciate it!

It's actually working out well at the moment. It's our second, and I tend to bath the eldest and get the newborn off to sleep by 8.30 and my partner is knackered so she's ready for bed at 9. I'll get a couple of days a week where I'll get a couple of hours each night, then 'dream-feed' the newborn at say 11.30/12 and hit the hay afterward.

Is there a way I can check the version of PSU? I seem to have 'filed' the receipt from when I bought it and can't find it..

open the case to check. Corsair has it prominently displayed on the side. cannot be missed :)
I'll have a look tonight and pop a reply in here - cheers!

I agree with this ^

No need to build a whole new system when the 5700X3D is so good.
Noted - just wondering if there's much difference between the versions of that card?

PowerColor Radeon RX 9070 XT Reaper 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card £569

Gigabyte Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card £578
XFX Quicksilver Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming Edition White 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £599
XFX Quicksilver Radeon RX 9070 XT Magnetic Air Edition White 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £649
XFX Mercury Radeon RX 9070 XT OC Magnetic Air Edition RGB White 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £659

Only minor differences. The more premium cards have higher clock speeds. But this only translates to a 2-3 FPS boost. By and large my answer has always been the same - unless you are going for a specific look, the cheapest card has the best value

I would get either the pulse or the swift for £560.
(I personally own a pulse)

It's an RM750 - I would have bought it when I built the PC, so perhaps 2020/2021.

I was told last night that plumping for a 5080 would likely set me up better for the phase we're in at the moment vs the 9070XT, so I had a look at userbenchmark and there's notable differences in each metric, typically in favour of the more expensive card, but I wondered whether anyone on this forum could shed any light? I think I could probably get £300-£350 for my existing GPU/CPU on ebay, which would cover the difference in price between the 9070xt and the 5080 but don't want to waste £300 if the difference will be minimal.

Rm 750 is a decent psu no need to change.
User benchmark is heavily anti-AMD so take them with a pinch of salt. Would avoid that website in its entirety to be honest.

The 5080 is approx 15% faster than the 5070Ti
the 9070XT trades blows with the 5070Ti

if you think it's worth an extra £400 then you do you. Personally I wouldn't.

For me, you only buy a 5080 if you really need every last frame, e.g. playing at 4K with all the shinies enabled and if I were to consider spending £1K+, I'd not be buying until the Super is out.

As always, cheers for all the help on this thread folks!

I managed to get a second hand 5700x3d which I've fitted today (bit of a faff getting reaquainted with unseating cpu coolers & isopropyl alcohol but got there in the end!)

I've also just had the RX9070XT delivered, which I intend to fit tomorrow. It's massive compared to the 3070FE it's replacing so that's going to be fun. I was just watching a youtube guide for fitting that card and have just noticed it's powered by dual PCIe cables, which isn't an issue because the RM750 PSU i've got is modular, but i've just checked and I've not kept the spare cables in the base of the tower - hoping they're up in the box in the loft which I'll have a look for tomorrow, but if they're not, will any 750mm 6+2 PCIe cable fit this PSU or do I need to buy a corsair specific one? I'm assuming there's no variants around that would have a single connector going into the PSU and split to 2 connectors to go into my new GPU?

The 3070FE only needed a single PCIe to power it, so will need to get to the PSU to sort that regardless.

Cheers in advance

Corsair specific. There's a cable compatibility chart on their website (which you will need to know the model to decipher), but probably a type 4 cable.

Possibly, but the power consumption of a 9070XT is quite high (300+ watts), so I'd avoid doing that unless necessary.

I've certainly got the space in the PSU to fit a second cable, so no reason not to, other than it being a bit faffy - I'm assuming there's no requirement to fit the additional cable alongside the original, and as long as I use either the third from the left on the top row, or either of the bottom right 2 ports from the below image, it'll be fine?

OP has got a RM750, so a type 3 or type 4 cable will fit
Yes - I just checked their chart to be sure and type-4 seems to be fine. I'm hoping i've still got the third cable that came with the PSU in the loft

You made the right choice, n1 :)

Genuinely owe a few on this forum a drink one day - it's been such a massive help. Things change so quickly with PC components and it seems there's plenty on reddit & other online forums who'd have you pump your life savings into a build for such a nominal uplift it's almost always not worth doing. Glad I remembered to call back in here before buying anything. Really appreciate the advice everyone. I've also just powered up my machine following the CPU install, and it booted to bios settings.. I hit escape and exit without saving, and it's booted to desktop immediately. I've then restarted to make sure it booted normally, and it has.. was there anything in Bios I should have changed?
