Flying to Australia

Luckily even though we've booked late mainly due to prices been stupid and had come down to something reasonable, we've still managed to get extra legroom seats for all flights.
Also our layover times are pretty short 2hr 50min and 3hr 45min so it's not a large chunk of time to try and kill in the airport. But it'll be nice to have a wonder around a different airport. Previously done a long layover in Hong Kong and an overnight stopover in Kuala Lumpur and hated both times.

By last minute in 2022, I meant we booked Friday night at 10pm and took off Saturday morning at 8am

Sadly partners terminally ill sister sent a message through saying she’d been given a week or two so it was one of those whatever it costs scenarios, ended up paying about £3.5k each for economy

That's a very sad reason to be flying across the world last minute.

Truly is, especially with Qantas doing the Heathrow to Perth route direct in 16/17 hours. Can only be a matter of time before more direct flights become available.

Quanta’s have been trialling project Sunrise for a while now - Heathrow to Sydney:

That’s not a flight you want to do in economy…

Pretty sure you wont be saying that 13 hours into the flight, when you'd normally be landing in Singapore/HK etc. Unless you're lucky enough to be turning left.

I think the plane will be a slightly different layout for that reason, giving a bit more legroom etc - I might be making that up though.

I’d only do it in a premium cabin - much like the lucky people on this flight which was halfway to the UK and had to turn round due to airspace issues over the Middle East, and ended up back at Perth after 15 hours flying.

Great if you’re in First or Business, where you get to experience it all again the next day for free!

Wouldn't it be premium economy as a minimum on the plane? Less hassle than having to sit in a connecting airport for 3hr imo.

Edit - just read it properly, premium and non-premium available.

There are pictures of the economy cabin. Look's pretty economy to me! Although it might be a tad bigger. Certainly not somewhere I'd want to sit (or be pestered constantly by people trying to get out of their seat) for that amount of time!

Horses for courses, I'd rather not waste hours sat on an uncomfortable airport seat

See in my example above (and most flights to be honest), I wouldn’t mind doing it in one hit!

Get on, settle down and just get through it!

Rather than having to pack everything up, deplane, wander around for a couple of hours then have to do the whole thing again.

Can also focus on getting on your destination time zone really easily.

And if you cant sleep, bring a steam deck and start a new factorio play through, the flight will seem like it’s about 45 minutes long :p

That's what lounges are for ;)

But either way there, at least you can walk around and do anything....but granted you aren't moving.

Project sunrise economy has a kind of “lounge” at the back of the plane, with enough room to stretch and do some light exercises.

I tend to do this every 6 or so hours on an Australia flight anyway, walk from one end of economy to the other, 5–10 mins of basic stretches and movement at the back where there’s usually a bit of room.

Really makes a huge difference to how stiff you feel at the end of the flight, especially as I’m 6’3” and my shoulders are wider than and economy seat

If I’m paying to do this, I’m paying for premium - I’m too old to pay to be miserable :D

I'd much rather do the journey in one. Great if you live in London and want to go to Sydney or vice versa but not everyone lives there. If you have any other travel to get to KS or Heathrow, then I think you'd be better off breaking it up from a total time point of view. I do Melbourne to Newcastle every 12 to 18 months or so. Direct to Dubai leaving at 11pm (on the 380, two hours quicker than a Boeing). 90-minute layover in Dubai which once you have changed terminals and grabbed some duty free you are only sitting around for about 30 minutes then direct to Newcastle. Isn't really going to get much easier than that.
