What's the problem, they've never had a problem with leaking confidential information or anything. /s

I'd encourage people who do not see that this is a mechanism for something more sinister to watch this. Blair quite clearly states that he wants it linked to facial recognition to judge who has a right to be in our country and to facilitate the police in making more arrests. This is coming in under the guise of identifying and tracking illegal aliens, but just think for a second what else that system enables and the dangers it poses.

If your view is that we already have established systems so there is nothing to worry about, then what is it that those do not achieve that makes this necessary?

They'll use it to **** over white British people like labelling them as far right extremists because they wrote a post on the internet 15 years ago by saying they don't like foreigners.

I am very much opposed to this. The government can check who people are using various methods already. I am ideologically opposed to it being compulsory. By all means introduce a voluntary scheme. But not compulsory. Criminals will simply find a way around it so it will not do what the government are telling us it will do, and it will simply waste more money.

I have no issues with this. There’s a fair amount of European countries that have ID cards that are mandatory and other countries in the world.

If it helps to stop all those coming over and send them all back. I’m all for this.

If you have nothing to hide, then there’s no issues, right?

I think bigger fish to fry like the cyber war going on, if we can't protect secret agents and the likes no chance of the general public and their data been protected

In what context?

While a reasonably unlikely scenario but a possible one - someone from a country with repressive attitudes to homosexuality comes to the UK, they use their freedoms here to look at information online, whether pornographic or educational - which is increasingly becoming age gated, but then that information gets leaked causing issues for them with their family/friends/relatives - potentially deadly in some cases. Or someone else uses their ID connecting them falsely to it.

Or something which is perfectly legal now becomes an undesirable thing in the future.

This is it.

All that will happen is criminals will be able to make fake ones and (literally) get away with murder whilst all the legit ones will just get hacked by russians.

Don't even have to go far to find examples where it's mandatory:

Belgium
Cyprus
Estonia
Greece
Luxemborg
Malta
Poland
Portugal
Spain

Actually a kind of pertinent point under the current situation, it is a potential vulnerability which could be used by the likes of Russia to cause mass disruption, probably a very stupid thing actually to introduce given ongoing events.

The petition against this is climbing pretty quickly.

Do not introduce Digital ID cards: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/730194
I’m going to start a petition making it mandatory for people to be reminded on a daily basis that online petitions are pointless.

If you’re honestly arsed, write to your MP. At least then you’ll get a nice form letter in a HoC envelope saying they’re ignoring you.

click bate video : It's the 80/20 rule though for identifying people some can still fake them though.

It's the accompanying police powers that Starmer needs to elaborate on, as that is the controversial aspect in France

But France doesn't have a mandatory National ID card. It's optional.

Nope. It'll just push people to use Tor instead which will make the problem worse.

I don't think a lot of people can appreciate the long term steps when it comes to this - currently there isn't a critical mass which would result in the development and operation of what I will refer to as "Super TOR", it needs far too many people involved to offer sufficient security to those up to no good. But as we go down that path it incentivises the creation of such and a user base who'll take it up and a side effect is enabling a level of protection for carrying out illegal activities online which currently isn't possible. The only way to tackle that is trusted hardware, locked down OS, only approved applications able to transmit information online - which might be a wet dream for some people but absolutely should never happen.

Sometimes it is better so to speak to let sleeping dogs lie, unfortunately I don't think those in power can help themselves.

The thing I find most amazing about this drama is that these people actually seem to believe that your passport, national insurance, bank account, drivers license, tax number, council tax number, etc etc, AREN’T already linked.

You already have a comprehensive digital footprint that is held by the government you goons. A single ID to simplify it is not a slippery slope to anything other than convenience and a way to actually get a help get a grip on who is in the country and when they shouldn’t be, which is apparently all anyone cares about these days.
