Not compulsory to carry. Only required to prove right to work.
Free at point of issue.

I don't see an issue with this, having come from a country where you pretty much HAVE to carry ID around with you. It's no big deal, and given all the noise about illegals working, it's a decent solution.

I was stunned when I got here and could vote without any form of photo ID and couldn't believe the kickback against it when it was implemented.

you are legally obliged to provide your name, address, and dob if an your suspected of an offence - refuse or give wrong details then youll get nicked ..
Driving offences youll be issued a producer..
 
decent idea.... if you got nothing to hide then you shouldnt have anything to worry about. I am full in support for having everyones finger prints and DNA recorded as well to speed up convictions and reduce cost on lengthy solicitor fees

EDIT: hopefully they wont give it to some crap like Serco to develop.

Nothing you have posted contradicted what I posted.

You name and address is your identity. They’ll check it in real time on ther police phone or radio it in and someone else will do it. If it doesn’t check out, you get nicked.

The police rarely issue producers in the digital age. If you can’t identify yourself to their satisfaction, they’ll simply seize your car because you can’t demonstrate you have insurance if you can’t identify yourself.
 
Not really against it in principle as long as there are rules on using it for other things like services/banking etc - although I am against government spending money on an IT project (X1000 cost than needed and will take longer) at the same time as having the debt levels we have currently. Covid app anyone????

I'm pretty sure they could crack down on illegal working using the current databases and laws but they don't

No particular issue with this in principle, and if it's well implemented and ties together all of the various forms of ID we need at the moment to interact with government bodies (tax, health, driving info, etc) then it'll increase efficiency and probably be a good thing. But if it's poorly implemented, costs a fortune, and doesn't solve anything then obviously it's rubbish.
 
What are the objectives of the program? We don't have enough of a police force to apply current law properly so I can't see how it would help with illegal immigrants.
 
Anyone who doesn't think it'll be a monumental cash drain and be implemented half arsed and then hacked the 1st day it goes live has obviously never seen anything the incompetent people who run this country have attempted, please can someone name 1 project that has been announced in my lifetime (born 1973) that has come in on time, on budget and be classed as a success?

In principle it's a good idea but throw the British government into the mix and it straight away turns into a scene from Fawlty Towers
 
This is potentially the birth of a UK social credit system.

Does no one remember the vaccine passports? Now imagine that on steroids. Potential to reach a point where unless you comply with the wishes of the government, then you'll be restricted on where you can go, who you go near through fear of digital contamination, what you can buy with your already quadruple taxed income from the job you only got because you'd be homeless without having to sign up and provide this ID.

A physical ID card I'd be fine with at this point, but a digital one? That will likely end up being needed for all sorts of services once it gets embedded in society, nah, it's further state spying and then the ability to coerce and control until the masses submit to whatever they have planned for us.

Imagine you're facing down the barrel of economic collapse and you want to keep control of the masses, this is exactly how I'd start to do it. It's scary. Even something I agree with Jeremy Corbyn on here.

EDIT: mods, please do not move this into SC, even if it gets political. Please make an exception for an incredibly important subject that could reach every individual in the country.

It won’t stop illegal immigration, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re given a digital ID as soon as they step off the boat. This is a very slippery slope indeed: first it’s introduced for one thing, and then it will inevitably be used for other, more nefarious purposes.

I also noticed that the BBC was one of the first to joyfully broadcast the news. Could that be because they hope to use it to police the TV licence? For example, you buy a TV and are required to show your ID, so they immediately know you need to buy a licence.

It’s quite dangerous that some people here think nothing of this. The company that wins the contract probably won’t have security at the forefront of their minds- only government contract £££ signs. I will give it a month before some kind of data breach happens.

Agreed with the negatives in here. We already top the charts on arrests for social media wrongspeak (I blame both main parties for this), and I don't trust UK institutions enough for this to be a good idea. I'm very glad we didn't end up with some form of permanent covid passport and I can't help but think we could end up with something like that from this. It certainly won't solve anything to do with the boats, that's solvable in a completely different way without needing to go down this route.

You don't need a license if you have a TV, although I get your point as they now know you have bought a TV.

You don't though, you can use a TV for many things that don't fall under needing a TV licence.
