Sold 5090 On eBay - Buyer says its faulty

So where do I start.

I’ve sold a 5090 on eBay. Fantastic working order etc. 3 months old.

Buyer took it to a computer shop and the shop stated the 5090 was faulty and the pc wouldn’t post. The report stated that “the pc arrived with the power supply missing and the old PSU cables still connected”. The buyer had asked the shop to install the 5090 and replace cables and installed a new power supply.

The shop tried the 5090 in a “similar” pc to the buyers and it wouldn’t post there either.

I’ll have to accept the return but am quite concerned. It might be ok for all I know.

My first thought is that with the PSU being removed that the buyer has tried to install a new PSU with the old cables. He then took it to a shop. If you want to pay a shop to fit a card, why remove the PSU?

Any thoughts?

Hopefully you took pictures of the card before shipping.

Chance they didn't go a computer shop at all/ buyers remorse or trying to pull one.

If you ever sell on ebay again a gpu make sure to take out additional insurance separate from your special delivery for these circumstances, in the event of damage, especially when the pricing is above £1K

It eats into profits slightly but peace of mind >

Maybe it did get damaged during transit also, or he's damaged it and is now shifting the blame to you.

Yeah unfortunately you don't have a lot of choices, wait for the 5090 to come back and hope the buyer is just dumb and couldn't install it and it still works.
Did you record the serials and stuff before sending it ?

Thanks for all your replies. I certainly thinking of whether I can use eBay in the future.

The serial number on the shop report is the same as the serial on the card. I can’t speak for whether the shop have taken it off the box or the card when they documented it. I did record the serial number on the photo of the backplate and I’ll be checking it on return.

Something didn’t sit right. I’ll be honest. I’ve been selling stuff on there for 20 years and this is the first time this has happened.

I paid for full cover even though it cost a fortune.

Did you take a picture of the serial number ? TBF I have sold countless cards on ebay but will only sell to those who have decent feedback. Lets hope you get the card back as it was.

When did the buyer join ebay, how much feedbacks do they have, was the address a residential home ( google it to check ) Are they registered as a UK ebay account.
Usually there will be red flags there somewhere if they are upto no good.

Lot of this going on with eBay and high end cards
Send it back and you can't get it to work
Because they removed the vram and gpu die

See loads of 4090 being sold on ebay with no vram
Or gpu die

Hopefully not what's happened in your case

I would rather sell to cex
And take the hit than risk ebay with a valuable gpu

Got a mate who did some seriously shady stuff
On ebay
He coined in ten grand and got away with it
Then opened a new ebay account in same name and address
Which is crazy to me
He should have been blacklisted but ebay didn't do that

This class of GPU clearly cant be that expensive to some people if one sells a 4090 and then a 5090 to CEX they give roughly half its value so the lost money equals getting scammed every two generations.

CEX pays 1k for a 5090 so that’s not a viable option unless they are so in demand that CEX buy for fulll price.
