What retro things have you done today?

Of course, although I will probably have to leave it to you in my will :D. Just for you though....

I posted the "build and test" of this a couple of pages ago if you want more LANParty pron.

...and there is a LANParty DK P35-T2RS with some work needed on the way.

I wish they still made them, good times!

I've been using Windows Vista lately and is it me or is it actually both really nice to use and looks great too! It performs well on a late C2D and a 9500GT. Sadly Gog launchers won't launch on it which is has pushed me back to XP for my retro nonsense.

Vista was great, the whole glass theme looked great at the time and even now has aged well :)
The issues were that the OEMs were allowed to sell machines that were way underspecced.
I think 256mb laptops were common during that era and that speaks volumes for the slander it got.

Funnily enough I built my first custom build around that time, it was a X2 6000+ 2gb ram with a vista x64 license and it ran fantastic, I can't recall the GPU though, it may have have been a 6800gt

Not exactly a retro activity as such, but I was astonished to find a BBC Master 128 being used for label printing and stock recording at a business I was delivering to this morning!

The guy who was unloading me said he'd been working there for over 30 years and the computer has been there since he joined, they've replaced the printer numerous times over the years.

Microsoft really should have had some rules in place about that. Although I did make a little bit upgrading pcs/laptops to cope with it better or even to "downgrade" to XP from 1 person.
Funny that the whole "glass" style is apples new thing right now

Got a Ducky Origin for one of my MiSTer setups

Where did you get that from? I ordered one from OcUK and they told me theres no ETA on stock.

Also, I really wish they had thought about it a bit more and not used the current Windows logo on the Windows keys... Use the word WIN, an old logo, a ducky logo, anything!! Poorly considered...

Ordered from OcUK three days ago, they had most of them in stock, I got one with Blue switches

So, another Saturday adventure for me. I've spend the whole morning losing stuff I had 10 seconds before, butchering and making a mess.

I wanted to put one of the DFIs into the Corsair C70, plus a few other jobs:

1 - Replace chipset heatsink and fan
2 - Take out the A64 3500 and replace with an Opteron 165 CCBBE
3 - Prove hypothesis re: AM2 and S939 coolers being compatable

The specs are now:

DFI LanParty UT NF4
Opteron dual core 165 CCBBE 1.8ghz
2x512 Corsair 3200C2PT (from consulting the oracle, I believe this to either be CH-5 or CH-6)
Sapphire Radeon X1950XTX
Asus Xonar PCIE Sound (onboard for this DFI is missing)

Put the new CPU in on the bench

It boots!

All looks good!

The butchering I had to do to replace the chipset heatsink made me wonder if it would ever work again...

But it did and I'm currently playing about with it! On reflection the white AIO wan't the best choice, but it was only £35

Stock 3D Mark, about 2k lower than the A64 3500

But pleased with the temps after that run

So a success. To answer my hypothesis wrt AM2/S939 compatability. Works fine. Put a moderm AIO on your S939 system today!

Ive got a boxed XP SP2 that I use for those era machines, and have to use a tool to stop it wanting to be activated but it works well enough. Always been skeptical of the modded editions even if they are going to be completely harmless for our non-connected retro uses

After a hectic few months outside of the old kit, finally a fully quiet weekend.

I finished the LanPary UT, and then set up an Asrock Z77 Extreme with an I5 and 8gb ram. Why? Because "SLI" testing.

9800GX2, GTX295, GTX295, GTX590, GTX 690

I hadn't had chance to test any of them and they all worked (Win 10). The 9800GX2 needs a clean and a repaste but apart from that all good. At some point I am going to give quad SLI a shot on the 295s.
