What happens when you travel to the US with your phone because now it's the only form of digital identity they'll accept? Phone confiscated social media checked.. and you're off to El Salvador. You'll need that burner phone capable of operating the wallet too.

Lastly. This wallet concept where what you have in the wallet demonstrates the right to X (ie an authorisation) assumes that Chinese phones and the operating systems and hardware chips that provide the wallet security aren't deliberately compromised to enable access.

If the wallet is a holds a public key, then your digital ID still needs a check. It's like a certificate. Stolen certs and keys/passcodes are provided on the dark web. So all it will do is push the immigration right token problem onto the dark web.

Perhaps the UK is attempting to decentralise it's nationality and identity to prevent, in a time of war, the problem if identifying people should the data centre be destroyed or communications cut.. that removes the challenge mechanism and makes the national ID a joke.

The digital ID doesn’t replace a passport so everything you’ve written is sort of irrelevant.

The US is already checking your social media accounts before you arrive, no digital ID needed.

People in the UK are concerned about a social credit system, it literally already exists in the ‘land of the free’.

True, true and true. It was an early morning thought that hadn't gone through the filter. I need some more coffee.

I think there is one thing we can say for certain, it’s definitely going to be a centralised system as that is the only thing that would make sense to a government (the government and the public bodies they control are the centre of our system of governance).

I'd prefer some sort of numerical tattoo on my arm or something, maybe even a barcode....

Coming in Labour's next term.

Along with smart uniforms, arm bands for the people of authority and sharp haircuts. And they will ask for "papers please" at checkpoints.

As long as we don't start blaming members of a certain religion for all of our societal problems, I think we're fine!

Well they did already have a beef with a certain one under Corbyn and Abbot is still quite an enthusiast :D

While that stance might seem reasonable it's quite naive because it ignores gradualism and social direction.
But then it's all assumptions and what-ifs.

I guess if people want to let their imagination fly based on the (very) little information the Government has released around Digital ID's, then that's up to them. But as i can see both positives and cons for this, i'll remain on the fence until more information is released on the what's, how's and why's before cementing any position.
