I have a 3950x, 64gb of ddr4 ram, ROG crosshair formula viii and 7900 XTX.

Would it be worth upgrading the motherboard, CPU and RAM?

I use 4k when playing 7 Days and Ark and get around 80fps, sometimes go back to C&C, starcraft 2 and AOE 2.

I have no target fps but just wondering what to expect if I were to upgrade.

I’d have thought an upgrade to a 5700X3D would be a good, if temporary solution. Then stop there and look to AM5 for your next step.
If I change up then it will be AM5 I'm thinking, just wondering if it will be a worthy jump for the outlay.

The increase in average FPS from the 3950X to a 7800X3D/9800X3D could be very large, but playing at 4K is going to reduce that benefit. Have you monitored those games to see what the utilisation is, GPU versus CPU?

Worth mentioning that if you do anything heavily multithreaded, you're going from 16 to 8 cores and even though AM5 CPUs are faster, they're not THAT much faster when you have half the cores.

At the moment I just game on it but I don't want to be limited so maybe I just stick with what I've got till it's not enough.

9800X3D+B850+64GB ram, will be a killer combo that you won't regret, and will last you years, whilst demolishing any task you throw at it :)
