I've just had my water bill through from Severn Trent (I pay twice-yearly) and the charges for both water and wastewater has gone up over 43% and 30% respectively!

It's not like I can change suppliers and as far as I can tell I've not even had an e-mail warning me of this increase (unless its in small print on a junk e-mail somewhere)

As far as rationale goes it says "Severn Trent is under-taking one of our biggest ever investments in our infrastructure that serves you, your community and the environment around us. To do this, we need to gradually increase bills over the next five years. Your bills are currently among the lowest in England – a position we want to continue" - could it be more vague??

In reality I think I'd have more respect for them if they simply said "Yeah, we want to make more profit"

*rant over*

Are you on a water meter? If not, how many in your household as it might be cheaper for you.

Secondly, search for Severn Trent customer charges and have a look at what they were last year compared to this year.

Or they could have said

"Severn Trent is under-taking one of our biggest ever investments in our infrastructure and your going to pay for it"

All part of the latest 5 year industry price review that was national news at various stages of OFWATs reviews, I'd be surprised if they didn't notify you at all but it would have been a while back now

Gotta keep those shareholders happy.

Or make up for the shortfall:

wikipedia said:
In December 2024, Severn Trent Water was accused by the BBC's Panorama of an accounting trick artificially inflating its balance sheet by more than a billion pounds. An investment ('Severn Trent Trimpley') that the company claims is worth £1.68bn in its accounts, was said to have no value to the overall business in reality, but made the company appear more financially robust, supporting payments to shareholders. Severn Trent denied the accusation, saying Panorama's allegations were "completely inaccurate"

Our new bill is £175 a month. But after a lot of arguing and bickering with Thames Water, they really came through and reduced it to £163.

£163 per month? How?

The only way to truly fight this fleecing (not just water bills, everything) is if everyone one stops paying.

Trying to organise that though is another matter, we need to get someone with influence to convince people, if enough people do it, it'll work.

Right, all of a sudden I feel a bit bad for complaining with some of the comments here - my 6-monthly water bill was £182 in March and has gone up to £247 in September - so in comparison to others here it sounds very cheap!
