The rise of Ozempic

I'm kinda wary about GLP1 agonists*, but I'm also fat AF, so I'm considering it (whatever reservations I have are probably out'weighed' (pun intended) by any downsides....)

*because of muscle loss, including heart

While the allure of a "something giving the edge" on top is appealing, still a lot to be said for striping the whole fitness thing down a bit.

Probably one for the folks partaking too. Most of "fat loss" (not necessarily "weight loss") can be boiled down to:

1) Calorie deficit
2) Use your muscles (even get a couple of 4 pinters of milk, squat, pick em up, raise to shoulder, raise over head, reverse back down to floor - do until you get tired, most days, it misses a couple of muscle groups but it's a ton better than nothing)
3) Feed muscles (work on more of calories coming from protein than other sources)

and there's really not masses else needed (for a large proportion of folks, inc a lot who've "tried everything" but there WILL be a tiny proportion with issues). Anything else is just to make it fit lifestyle.

Th trouble is that simply saying ‘calorie defecit’ doesn’t come close to explaining how difficult that can actually be.

The mind is a powerful thing, and the overarching WANT to eat is one of the biggest issues, and the one that I have. I KNOW how it all works, what I’d have to do to make my body burn fat and slim down, but because the brain won’t just let you go cold turkey and not eat completely it makes it a very different scenario than, say, giving up cigarettes or alcohol. I don’t do either of them (never tried smoking and have a social drink maybe once a year) and there’s nothing in my head that makes me want to either, and I can survive quite happily like that.

With food however, it’s something that you NEED to survive, and overcoming that impulse using pure willpower is unbelievably difficult, especially as the basal metabolic rate drops the thinner you get, so the deficit must increase to maintain the weight loss.

Having something that blocks out the signal telling you to do one of the most basic of human functions is a powerful tool, and to me is no different to things like creatine or protein powders to those trying to get hench AF.

My wife started Monjaro about two weeks after me (I was her canary in the coal mine). I've lost twice as much weight as her - not because I've been more active, but because I started using Huel meal replacement shakes for breakfast & lunch, so I've been able to track my calories with far more accuracy and discipline.

She's realised the benefit and has been using Yfoods shakes (smoother milk protein instead of Huel's gritty pea/plant protein) for the last couple of months, which have helped her lose even more weight.

I find using Huel much easier than trying to track the calories, carbs & protein content from a variety of different food sources...

I tried Huel black shake, had it over the course of an hour for my lunch and for the rest of the afternoon i was feeling bloated and sick - sacked them off now.

Protein bar and one of these last week: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0F4488W51?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 55g of protein for lunch.

Yeah - it can be a bit much. My wife has ARFID, so she's really funny with textures. She finds the milk-protein derived shakes far easier than the grainier veg protein ones.

Just be wary of the bigger brand name protein shakes (Arla, Lidl's supermarket own brand, etc) - whilst they're labelled high protein, fat free, etc some can be really high in sugar with a tonne of emulsifiers and bulking agents.

I’ve been on it since May. I was doing huel black for lunch. Got a bit bored of it. I still have it often but mix it up.

I actually found ChatGPT great for meal prep, suggestions and macros/calories.

For breakfast I’m having overnight oats:
50g oats
150ml milk
70g blueberries (or other mixed berries)
10g chia seeds
Scoop of whey protein
Comes in around 500 calories and good macros and fibre.

Lunch will be 3 scrambled eggs with a knob of butter on a piece of wholemeal toast.
Or a huel black
+ a banana

Dinner is whatever the wife cooks, mixed bag. Cottage pie, curries, sometimes less good ‘beige’ dinners.

And if I go to the gym 2 scoops of whey afterwards with chia seeds or flax seeds.

I’m down from 119kg to 99kg. After that food I’m getting 140+g of protein 30g of fibre. And just over 2000 calories which is still an aggressive deficit doing heavy weightlifting 3 times a week at my body weight.

On the plus side, confirmed my suspicions and tried on some size 34 jeans today. They fit me, bought 2 pairs . I was size 40 when I started and XXL t shirt, wearing L t shirts now.

Well despite the kebabs and drinking, also had lamb curry twice last weekend.

And..... I've done my bloody back in so I can't do my usual work out, in fact basically no exercise at all for a week.

I lost 6 pounds in the space of a week.

Its crazy.

I'm guess I'm eating less in the week, but I can't say I have "significantly" changed, just not snacking at all, and having a bit (but not much) smaller dinner.

I'm not actually that overweight anyway, I weighed myself the day before I took it and I was 14st 5lb. My ideal weight is probably about 12st 7lbs, maybe at a push 12st, but I got down to 11st 7 lbs before and people said I looked I'll and we're worried I had cancer or something.

This is Wegovy as well, which isn't supposed to be as good as Mounjaro.

Not tried Wegovy - but 6lbs in a week is phenomenal! I think the most i lost was 4lbs, now averaging 2 - 3lbs per week.

Maybe it was a lot of water weight. Any side effects?

Also, with MJ, make sure you are drinking plenty of water, 2 - 3 litres per day. Because i'm not eating a great amount, i also make sure i am getting enough protein, you lose muscle as well as fat and end up looking like a melted ice cream cone :)

I'm 3 stone down since Jul 25, so averaging a stone per month. Aaaaaaaaaaand, i tried on my RAF No5 uniform and it now fits - i will be going to the Xmas Ball   .

I was measured for it back in 2015 and over the years it seems to have shrunk.

No side affects at all mate.

Well..... The only side effect was I didn't exactly tell the Mrs, although I wasn't particularly trying to hide it, I have a beer fridge in the garage and she found it last night and went ******* mental about it.

Ha! Same in my house. Although now she can see the benefits of the drug, she has become a lot more open to it after doing her own research. She still has concerns about the possible long term effects as these are still not known, but wifey is a lot more supportive than she was initially.

Celebs have been on stuff for years and i read this morning that there's around 2.5m Brits jabbing.

I am exactly the same as you except 3xl t shirt and this is the post I needed to read. I'm going to order mounjaro tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

Also going to start researching huel

Use monj.co.uk to find the best price & first order discount codes...

And look for a Huel referral code (plenty on Reddit) for your first order*, as you'll get a decent discount, a shaker & t-shirt included.

Just a heads up: their Banana flavour is awful (like flavoured antibiotics!), but Salted Caramel & Cinnamon Swirl are great (and I blend half a frozen banana into both to mix it up).

(...*and your second, third, fourth orders, if you use the "dot in Gmail address" trick ;) )

Holy smokes, there's a lot of variation in pricing!!!! Is it OK to order it from places you've never heard of? Its it like a packaged product the same everywhere or could the dodgy outlets lace it with stuff?!
And look for a Huel referral code
I like the cut of your gib sir, never even thought to look at referral code, I am planning to buy one from Sainsbury's about £4 to see if I like it first. Love the Gmail sign up trick!!!!
