X2 pcs, one set of speakers...

I currently have 2 PCs connected to one monitor and both send sound to the monitor via dp and hdmi cables. I then have a cable from the headphone out port of the monitor to a mini amp. The sound automatically switches depending on which PC is active on the monitor.
This does mean the sound is coming through the GPUs in both cases instead of the motherboard sound. I don't know whether there is any difference in quality between the GPU and MB sound?

Re the splitter i linked on page 1.

Its about the size of a.matchbox, works perfectly for the job. No noticeable issues with the sound out put.

I've never used this configuration, so others may be able to chime-in and correct me, but isn't the audio in both cases motherboard audio being sent digitally via HDMI, or Display Port. Differences will be the audio source on each PC.

Sounds like a result!
