So, as some of you know, it is time for my son's refresh from am4 to am5,
I was going to buy a 5080 for this build
Normally, I used to build him PCs with my old cast-offs
but those days are gone since I don't really upgrade like I used to, my current build is meant to last 10 + years
I was going to buy a 5090 upon release, but previous to the release, there was talk of them needing not one, but two 12vhpw leads, where I only have x1
I did not fancy buying a new PSU, for that, nor paying to have the computer rebuilt either.
Long story short, rather than drop almost £1k on a new 5080, I'm just going to give him my 4090 for the build, and keep the 1k to help pay for a 5090, as saving another £1.2k is not going to be too difficult for me, esp considering I will get an extra third of his old am4 PC sale (£500, plus the 1k he owes me for the rest of the system) maybe the price of a 5090 will even go down while I save?

Seems win-win to me at this point,
gonna have to use this 7800 igpu for a while, but all I do is play chess, browse the internet, and use forums, and it is doing a stellar job so far, it even gets 56 fps in Furmark, max settings at 4k, and runs my 4k desktop at 144hz, I'm pretty surprised tbh,
So what am I going to use a 5090 for then, I hear you cry,
well, I was planning to give Cities: Skylines 2 a whirl, and now, once I have the 5090 sorted, that is my cue to hop onto 8k, which will be another £4k unless 8K prices dramatically drop, but £4k
Will be doable too. 8k Cities: Skylines 2 is meant to be a resource hog to run, but this all gives me something to look forward to. It's not like I have anything else to spend money on anymore! o.O

I hope your son appreciates your generosity. I am going to swap my 3090 for my sons 3080 and take the hit when I sell as my 3090 wont make much more than a 3080.

Seems a little late in the cycle. The Super and Ti versions will be with us soon. The Ti/super cards will almost certainly be on banned to China list so will likely also be cheaper.

Son to now get 4090 hand me down

People usually buy one card and keep it for 3+ years. You've mentioned x4 cards in 10 months.

His son has done very well out of it.
He always has, he'd been on my old repurposed tech for years, starting with the BFG GeForce 80800.I bought x2 of those in the mid 00's to sli with at ~ £ 200 each, then I realised I could play wow on just one, and made my boy another wow machine with the spare GeForce 80800.
. I've still got both of those cards in my ancient GPU collection.
I'd test them to see if they still work, but they are 6 pin

it's going to take me a while to gather the £2k, at which point I'll simply buy the best GPU available, then start saving again for an 8k screen. By next autumn, i'll be on 8k with a powerhouse to run it!

My son bought a 3rd Gen i7 system with a 980ti for his first PC using birthday money about 7 or 8 years ago. It turned into a Ryzen system shortly I've upgraded his GPU a couple of times too he's currently on a 6800XT without having to put his hand in his pocket. I thought I was being good to him but you're putting me to shame :)
