Good morning OCUK,

I'm in a bit of a bind, over the weekend my PC suddenly died and after a bit of fault diagnosis it turned out the graphics card (MSI Geforce GTX980) had given up the ghost causing it not to boot.

Unfortunately my MoBo is an LG1151 using PCIe 3.0.

I'm having trouble finding a decent replacement card to get me through until my inheritance comes through when i intend on building an Up to date system. Most cards I can find available are either PCIe 4.0 or 5.0, I'm guessing neither of those will work with my board?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.:)

What CPU do you have out of interest? That socket was used for a few generations despite chipset limitations being (artificially) introduced.

What sort of budget do you have?

Regardless, a pci-e 4 or 5 card will work in a gen 3 slot, they're backwards compatible, although there might be other concerns.

Currently I'm running an i5 5600. I don't really want to spend more than £300 as its just to get me by for now, the cheaper the better really. I've had my eye on the RTX5060 which is currently at £270.

If PCIe are backwards compatible then it shouldn't matter too much but i didn't want to pull the trigger on the 5060 and it not work when i plug it in.

You could just grab a 2nd hand 1080 or 2080 and sell it on when you get your inheritance and build your new PC.

I need to get my post count up a bit to get access to the members market, that would really help me out right about now

I assume I'm not breaking any rules here, as OCUK don't sell second hand old cards, but you can pick up a 1060 or 1070 for around £60-80 via CeX, I believe they come with a warranty period too.

Hmmm, I'm sure we used to have a CeX in Norwich, might have to look next time I'm there!

Please don't spend nearly £300 on a 8GB card :o I'd get a 9060 XT 16GB for a bit more and then you can keep that for a good long while.

The AMD cards also tend to be better with older PCI-E gens (because they're built with more lanes and the 9060 XT 16GB has more VRAM) and with older CPUs due to lower driver overhead.

I would recommend a second hand RX590 8gb as they are cheap at £70 with a 5yr guarantee and work well if your really strapped for cash. Otherwise simply spend £330 and get a brand new 9060xt 16gb. That will do if you build a new PC. Nvidia dropped support for their old GPU's, I am sure AMD will too.

None of the older GPU's are that great, and none of the expensive second hand GPU's going for around £300 are better than a 9060xt 16gb.

I would avoid anything new with 8gb of memory too. If I needed a GPU for even an old 4770K Haswel system, it would be the 9060xt 16gb.

You guess wrong. Cards are backwards compatible. However you will need to ensure that the card you buy is a x16 card and not a x8 card otherwise you may see reduced performance. I believe (BICBW) this affects your proposed RTX 5060.

For a modern card take a look at the 12 GB Arc B580 or the 16 GB Radeon RX 9060XT (not the 8 GB). The B580 is twice as fast as your 980, the RX 9060 XT faster still. For an older card consider a Maxwell Titan X - a 12 GB glorified 980Ti - or a GTX 1080 Ti.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £577.97 (includes delivery: £7.99)

You would have qualified under the old rules. Perhaps abject grovelling to the Dons might bear fruit? :)

I ignored the B580 as it apparently doesn't play well with older games and older hardware, and is a PCIe 8x4 interface.

Well im currently reduced to using the onboard graphics for the time being... You know the old adage 'Bad luck always comes in 3s'??? Well I'm now up to number 4!

In the last month We had the main water feed to our house decide to burst, Our boiler decided to go down, the PC randomly died and this morning on the way to work... the front pipe of my exhaust decided to detach itself from the rest of the exhaust system

GPU is firmly on hold for the time being  I appreciate everyone's input though, at least I've got an idea now for when I can actually get it sorted.

Since you have nothing to lose, how about disassembling it and giving the GPU a clean and repaste?
