The Mass Effect series. I played the original Mass Effect back in 2007 for about 30mins or however long it look me to decide the gun play was miles behind Halo, which I was hugely into at the time with Halo 3 having launched 2 months earlier. Since then I've seen ME appear on so many 'my favourite games of all time' or 'recommend me a game' lists I thought I'd give it another go and...
...I've got somewhat addicted. I've been playing the original versions rather than the remastered version, which I'm glad I did as I like seeing how the graphics evolved and what the original flaws were. I've been playing as an infiltrator, so pistols and snipers. Safe to say the snipers in ME1 weren't the greatest, with crazy amounts of sway for a gun class that's supposed to be accurate. Why didn't they reduce sway and also reduce damage if they were concerned about them being OP? I bumped into a bug that's never been ironed out where if you're using an AMD CPU on certain levels all characters turn into black pixelated blobs. Despite these negatives, i put about 24 hours into the campaign and loved it, so immediately moved onto ME2.
I can see why ME2 is often cited as the best in the series. Loads of quality of life improvements such as more auto save points, no long journey from the Normandy to the Citadel, less back tracking through levels to the Normandy when you've completed them and snipers that shoot straight! I liked the simple weapon upgrade system with no more milling hundreds of copies of identical weapons. Great storyline, some compelling characters, some interesting choices to make. Loved it, so having put 24 hours into that too (weird how close my completion time in ME1 and ME2 were) I've recently started ME3.
I'm only an hour or two into ME3 and maybe it's just because it's different, but I'm not quite 100% convinced yet. The storyline seems to jump substantially from where ME2 finished with not explanation as why. I'm not sure about the weapon / weight trade off system either, but like I say that might be just because it's new and different to ME2. Looking forward to it though, I'm really glad i went back to it and understand why it appeared on all those lists
