Harry Potter HBO TV series

The first pictures of John Lithgow as the new Professor Dumbledore in the new Harry Potter HBO TV series have emerged as crews film on location in Cornwall.

Why is he next to the beach? I don't recall any beaches being settings in the 1st book.

I'm thinking of a scene of him hunting for horcruxes, but that is much later and his hand should be withered if so.

Are they literally following the books though? Surely they will add some variety? Otherwise we've been there twice before (books and movies)

This is a good look at the differences. It's a lot more than you'd expect.

Main thing I noticed is they must have bigger typeface in the American books as they all have many more pages it seems.

It's not uncommon for big-budget productions like this to film scenes for future seasons, as they are likely to see it through.

Either that, or Lithgow just wanted to bump into @moon man

Off course, but to jump 5 seasons ahead?!?! Are they trying to film all of Dumbledores scenes to avoid the slight issue that Richard Harris's death caused for the movies?

The whole selling point of this show, I think, is that's it's a series so they can do full justice to the book, i.e. include things that were left out for the film for time reasons

The story itself should be a carbon copy of the books.

Wouldn't surprise me if they are as Lithgow did say this would be his last acting job due to it being a potential 8 year commitment and he's getting on.

I'm not sure how they can though - for the beach scene Harry should be with him as they go to the cave together. But obviously the boy actor is nowhere near old enough yet. Unless they're going to do some crazy CGI. Unless they film him finding the cave, but that wouldn't add a huge amount of anything to anything.

as others have said, this allows for the huge amount of content that was left out to possibly be included. we have only been there before once with the books.

this was my thought. it looks better that he's the age of now for scene that takes place now, but is shown in the future, over filming a scene where he should be the current age but it's filmed 6/7 years later. given the pictures show just dumbledore there, it suggests this is him searching for the horcrux

it could also just be they are filming a dream scene and want to use a clear/open area, or even, they are filming a quuick "reaction" scene of dumbeldore getting the news of the potter parents death.

there was a tv series filmed down the road from me years ago. i only watched the show because i wanted to see my town in it. they filmed all day. in the end it was 10 seconds of content. 10 seconds. all day.

anyone else think he looks great as dumbledore? i really hope he sees it through this series.

Could be a flashback to something that happens before Harry Potter is born, that is mentioned in later books but bought forward in the story for narrative reasons.

Looking at the other leaked pictures - it looks to potentially be a scene with The Flamels

There is no storyline reason to change the order of any events, or add extra scenes. There should be no new made up flashbacks to try to explain things to viewers, when everything made sense in a book aimed at children decades ago.
It''s hard to explain to people who have not read the books when they came out, but the story is near perfect and there are no gaping plotholes or unexplained events that need fixing (like a lot of modern media!) or messing with. That is not the purpose of this series

Anyway, i'm sure it will eventually come to light what these scenes are for. I looked at the closeup ones of Dumbledore in full attire, he looks more like Sir Anthony Hopkins than John Lithgow.

I'm struggling to remember which book that was in.

If it's The Flamels - book one, Dumbledore does mention he discussed with Nicholas Flamel that it was the right time to destroy the stone etc at the end of the book. He created the Philosophers Stone.

Some things don't translate 1:1 from book to TV/movie - as long as it is done shrewdly some things may need to be changed around a bit.
