Are smart kettles worth it vs a smart plug?

My kettle has died. It's started leaking from the base slowly.

It is ancient. Like over a decade for sure. Maybe 15 years!

I'm not usually a fan of smart kitchen appliances (lack of support etc shortens their life) but I do like having my kettle on a smart plug. As long as I remember I flick the kettle switch on before bed and when I start work the kettle has just boiled.

Same goes for being upstairs and boiling it before I go down. (work from home).

Yeah it's extremely lazy. But this is a tech forum.

Anyone use on and like it? I've heard bad things and most people seem to say "use a smart plug".

Sounds like you want a Teasmade :D. Or if it's coffee you prefer you can get drip filter coffee machines that work on timers as long as you preload it the morning before.

We've a boiling water tap that i have on a smart switch so it comes on at 7:30 in the morning and goes off around midnight. Love it and means theres more space on the counter top to dump half opened biscuits :D

We have a hot water dispenser that can dispense between 150ml to 1.5l on press of a button, which suits us and has done for many years now.
If there were never an option to replace this type of machine in the future, then I'd probably go for a Smart kettle over a Smart plug tbh.

These are super expensive though right?
I laughed when I saw the price of the qooker

If you live in an area with particularly hard water they are a pain - if you don't clean them regularly they die pretty quick - kettles also bad for it but don't need as regular maintenance.

Same here, complete game changer. I don’t have the smart plug though.

I’ve got a qooker tap it is class. You don’t need to spend that much now to get a boiling water tap. When I got mine it was the only option really.

Theres a few that now do boiling water for cheaper.

If you don’t mind not getting boiling water, you can get a hot water tap for under £200.

Or Qettle for £500 ish for boiling water

My typing is terrible*

Yeah this is crazy expensive to me. A smart. Kettle is approx 80. A hot water tap wouldn't be good enough (this is mainly for tea). But 500 is waaaay more than I'd spend for convenience

Luckily we are fine in that respect.

Ours can use brita water filter cartridges, but tbh we've not bothered with them for years.

Apart from the fizzy water and the like, isn't the qooker and others of a similar type just a smaller version of that little hot water boiler many office break rooms have?

And is this just the same, without the TV adverts??

I should have mentioned that the instant hot type tap has been another one of our considerations for a while

yes a smart kettle where you can trigger it remotely without a button wouldn't be great .... to be honest I've forgotten did I fill the kettle or not ....
kettle boiling time for teapot ~3mins is also small versus waiting for the tea to have cooled to drinking temp in the mug, so you have to multi-task anyway.

( hot taps don't do right temp for coffee even if they can do some boiling water , but are using more electricity.)

Yeah, it’s 100% a luxury product. It’s one I couldn’t do with out now. great for things like pasta as well. Use it all the time. Also keeps the kitchen worktop clean and clutter free.

Depends, if it’s a zip tap then yeh it’s basically the same thing. If it’s just a hot water holder then no, no it’s not.

No that one you linked is a hot water tap not a boiling water one - Temperature adjustable from 75 - 98°C

What tends to happen is the water is stored at 98ºc but by the time it’s ran up the pipe it’s not that boiling hot way if you will. It sounds stupid but it just isn’t that great, it’s like its not hot enough to brew correctly.

Quooker and other boiling water taps hold the water under pressure - super heated to 108ºc so it’s boiling when it comes out - source

This is what i’m getting at with the temp, it sounds nuts but it’s definitely a thing. It’s even more noticeable if someone has one of those one cup hot water dispensers - like this one.

instant coffee's typically when I wait after kettle has boiled to cool a bit and pour water down side of cup - hot water taps with thermal tank inertia wouldn't quickly then be providing near boiling
for both tasks of adding water into saucepan(steaming/boiling) and making pot of tea - kettle which you more safely carry to the saucepan/pot is dumping 1+L of all boiling water in a <5 seconds into either receptacle.
