Jesus wept....

Has anyone else living in a "non visa" country traveled to the UK since this ETA BS?

It's literally telling me I cannot enter the country without a £600 proof of right to abode certificate... Or a British passport.
Good luck me getting to that in 6-8 weeks.

I can't even apply for an ETA because of I'd be lying? I guess I will lie and bring my old uk passport and be prepared to fellate my way to Romford.

I'm fuming right now I don't know, after reading government websites, embassy websites and countless forum discussion threads half say it's fine, half say no one's even checking (yet)
But some say it's the death penalty for even trying..

Seriouslly...

I'm dual Sweden/British citizenship, I'm actually gonna look at renouncing it if it's cheaper and faster than a passport, if I even need it? Wtf?

Move this to travel section if better

It's £16 for an ETA, pretty much what it'll cost me next year to go to the EU (lasts for three years iirc).

Next time I go I have to give fingerprints, photo and all that malarkey but we don't have to pay until sometime in 2026.

But, yeah, why would you be lying on an ETA? It's for trips to the UK, same way it'll work for people going into the EU.

Sorry but they don't want your sort here.
I'm sure Sweden is nicer anyway
As BUDFORCE says - find a dead Irish relative and get an Irish passport!

BTW the website says it's sorted in a few minutes, at most 3 days. It is only October.

I don't need one I'm a British citizen....

But I can't prove I'm British without a passport or a "certificate of the right to abode in the UK" (600 quid lol)

I just illegally applied for a ETA on my Swedish big PP. And will illegally enter when I arrive.( Yes it took 2 mins and 19 euros)

It's a complete joke.

Ah right, I got you. I can't see it being illegal if you're travelling on your Swedish passport, you're travelling as a Swede after all.

Same way as a dual citizen can't enter on one passport and leave on the other one AFAIK

Will just have to fork out for a UK one if you want one.

Firstly, ETA is just to get on the plane, as a British citizen you cannot be denied entry into the UK once you are at the border. Off course it is your responsibility to have sufficient proof of being a British citizen, such as a valid British passport.

Secondly the Home Office have themselves said they are not enforcing ETA's until 2026 at the earliest - if a non visa national arrives at the border without an ETA - they will still be allowed entry.

Thirdly there is no issue whatsoever in getting an ETA on your Swedish passport, to make the check in process simple so the airline let you board.

Lastly - renew your British passport, as you could have avoided all this just by being more organised. I have 2 passports and make sure they are always renewed, thought it was common sense.

^This really.

All my mates that are dual nationals have passports for both countries to prove they're dual nationals.

Not sure what the issue is, you are entering the country as a Swede so those rules apply.

The same would apply if you tried to travel to Sweden on your British passport.

People with dual citizenships travel on the passport which gives them the lowest friction, that requires you to actually have the other passport.

This is the Britain the flag ******* dream of :D

The site says allow at least 6 weeks so it would likely be less than that at this time of year. No harm in applying for a passport you'll use for 10 years either way.

Moral of the story. Keep any passport you are entitled to up to date. I have both British and Australian ones and always travel on the one that is easiest but since brexit it doesn't make that much difference but there is no way I am giving either up or letting them lapse. I've renewed my UK one a few times from abroad. Its a super quick and efficient service. Takes about 4 weeks.
