Do lots of young people not work these days ?

Are you happy to pay for their state supplied housing and benefits?
Yes of course, although as an early retiree I do try my hardest to not pay much tax. I'm a poor person trying to live the life of a non tax paying rich person.

I had a 24 yo young man start with us on Monday. The kid's already running circles around the older guys, turns up to work early, always happy to jump in and do stuff, a genuine breath of fresh air. Kid's gonna go far in life. Don't believe all the crap you read on social media ;)

Pfft, don't let facts get in the way of a good rant and whine :P

all that will happen is manager comes along thinking "what a gullible mug" takes advantage of the kid, who then learns the hard way

In a lot of areas the job market is pretty sparse and the demand high, even more so if you're attempting to get an entry level job that has a career path.

That coupled with a similar problem with housing and dramatically rising food costs (which until recently have made up a lower proportion of household spend the last couple of decades) present a bleak picture.

I don't really see why people shouldn't be 'forced' to work, if they e.g want to claim benefits yet are physically capable.

I mean there isn't a neighbourhood in the country that is free of litter. Would it really be that controversial to say those on benefits need to spend say...3hrs a week picking some up? That still leaves 35hrs of time that would be spent working in a week, to look for work.

Then advertis for street sweepers..not using slave labour.

oh as for doiing 40 hours of job search a week..rofl

We get a lot of younger ones through work, even those with degrees, who are resigned to doing their 16 hours a week + benefits and still living with parents and have no expectations/ambition of anything.

Civil Conservation Corps... 1930s US... Roosevelt New Deal... Not entirely without merit

No point in getting angry about it. But I don't blame them at all. Many jobs are <20 hours a week, and you're better off on benefits .

Remember listening to retail staff saying they're on 6 hour contracts. like wtf!

Who said I was getting angry? I just asked a question... I never stated MY view...

Same...and I work for myself

If I won the lottery I wouldn't be one of these people that carried on working for something to do. Might do some charity work occasionally though

I'm not sure what if be like born today.

I think I'd struggle. I think I'd probably be one of the slackers. I'd probably be envious of the influencer types raking it in, struggling to understand how I get there.

I think my mental health would be dire with Facebook and Instagram at a young age.
I think i wouldn't see a future.

Today, I think you feel like a failure if you're not an influencer, and it feels like anyone can be one. And it's thrust into your face. House etc seems out of reach.
I'd probably give up as I've never really liked a job and I'm 40 now. I've made many wrong decisions in life over career too. It bothers me now, but at least I've got past the ****. But if I was young now? I think I'd just be consumed with envy.
My Mental health was/is bad enough. But social media has definitely made it worse for me. F knows how broken if be with social media + mental health from a young age

It literally pays not to work nowadays

Why slog for 40h/week on minimum wage when one can get slightly less on benefits whilst working 0h/week?

My 21 year old nephew tried to sign on for the first time a few weeks back and said they are really strict with regard to making you attend interviews. He's been signed on for 3 weeks so far and has been made to attend 5 different interviews all of which were setup by the job centre. He's been offered two jobs now but all he wanted was some free money for a couple of months before he goes travelling, he wasn't expecting to actually have to do stuff to get the free money lol.
