What retro things have you done today?

690 one of my favourite cards of all time, but also the first and last time I ever got scammed during an ebay sale so its bittersweet to see them now

I sold it via eBay (personal seller btw not a business)
Some weeks later I get the message from ebay to say I have to do a return and I recieve back the 690 absolutely cooked and not working and ebay take back the 300 odd quid.
It was actually outside of the normal return window too and I never have returns enabled so I dont even know how they managed to push that through.
Was a long time ago now so cant fully remember all of the specifics, only that it was a life lesson and I never did do any "high" value ebay sales again.

What a nighmare. I've been lucky so far, but I never sell anything (not because of ebay, because I'm a deranged hoarder)

Had a bit of a tidy-up/clear out today. Packing these away due to irregular use. These do not even constitute the whole collection; I have more stashed about the house including: 3xN64s, 2xNeoGeo CDs, 3xAnalogue consoles and more PS1s/2s/3s). There’s also 4xvintage PCs and some home computers.

When you add all the power and display cables, controllers and games etc. you realise how much of your hobby is just sitting in storage.

I’m going to aim to reduce the collection somewhat over the next 6 months, but it’s still hard to part with this stuff. Anyone else needing to reorganise or re-evaluate their collection?

I've got a room of handheld stuff (which is supposed to be "small", but takes up most of a room) mainly Nintendo. I considered getting rid a month or so ago just because it's sitting doing nothing on display. All in all though, after speaking to Vectis auctions (no way it's going on ebay, far to much hassle) I decided to sit on it for another few years - 25% commission is hard to swallow. If it's just some of those items you've posted you want to get rid off, well that's a different proposition.
 
Anyway, todays activity. Sorry for boring you all, but nobody else is interested :-)

I got a Maximus Formula up and running with a QX6700, 8gb and Vista 64 Ultimate. Installed Fallout3 and had a play. Gave it 30 mins and was perfect, but with BF6 about didn't hold my interest.

So, I decided to do a clean and repaste of my 9800GX2 which when I tested it, was hitting 90C+. Well it was an effort but what an interesting card. 2 9800s in SLI (complete with cable) wrapped around a big heatsink. Exec summary: it was filthy, took an age to take apart and sort, but I managed a 10C or so improvement in temps even if it still one hot card.

Filthy as you like. Don't think it's been touched since 2008



What a faff. Still woth doing.



Tried it naked and it worked first time. I am blessed.



Full run on Heaven - no idea why the temps are not on the Heaven screen as normal, though I might have borked one of the cards but GPUZ confirms all ok. Drop in temps. Objective achieved.

Sounds like a lot of handhelds! I’m really just struggling to shrink my collection down in a meaningful way. I feel like I should keep all of it for various reasons, probably because it took many years to build. Sometimes I think that is where the bulk of the enjoyment lay.

I’m going to try and reduce the multiples first, but that’s still tough - I have pristine unopened stuff and then items which are merely ‘GC’ for actual use.

Are you looking to reclaim space or do you just enjoy tinkering more?
 
I picked up a white Saturn (and a densha de go controller) the other week in Japan. Both cheap as chips in a junk bin.
Changed out the PSU when I got back home, for one that can take a USB C PD input. Works perfect and was so quick to swap out. :)

Waiting on a Saroo cart, an analogue pad, and an upscaler. Then I can finally see what I missed by going N64 and PS1 in those days.

The original white pad sounds a bit rattly when shaken. Not sure how to fix that, maybe new rubber membranes?
I've went for the 8bitdo adapter, so I can use my wireless M30 instead. Fun Saturn times await!

It's a lot. It's not about the space, I just hope to find a good time to make a bit of a return and focus on PC parts as I actually use them!

Turns out, you really can have "too much stuff" :-)

Controller-wise i bought a Retro-Bit wireless 8 button one - it’s almost indistinguishable in feel/colour/ quality from the original wired controller that came with my This Is Cool Saturn. It’s only the shoulder buttons that feel differently sprung, oh and it’s wireless of course. Very happy with it.

I added a Satiator, All-one ram cart (easier than using the original 1&4mb carts that I have) and I’ve been golden since. The SF2 and Dark Stalkers fighters in particular are excellent. Probably the best ports going, outside of the arcade.
 
The Saroo was just so cheap, I figured I’d pick it up right away. I can see me putting a fenrir in place of the cd drive at some point, as it’s compatible with all games.
I’ve played so many systems via emulation, but aside from a little guardian heroes, I’ve always wanted to leave the Saturn until I had the actual console.

Edit: The Sega analogue pad came today. It's so much nicer to hold than the normal one. A lot like the Dreamcast controller. Saroo came as well so had a quick game of Nights, and it'll definitely be fun (when the upscaler comes).

At the weekend I was going to try an old LCD monitor I bought with my Duron 800 Windows 98 PC....

I say "was going to" because it appears to be dead :( Turns on for 20 seconds, no display, and then turns itself off. Very annoying. I've got some troubleshooting ahead lol.
