When going to a gig, band Merch of the band you're seeing, other band Merch or neutral?

Waiting outside the Barrowlands to see some metal band called Bleed from Within with my son. I'm not particularly looking forward to it, it's not my bag, baby.

But the question entered my head. Everyone knows you love the band that are playing, do you show support for them, wear some other band Merch to show what other bands you like, or go for something neutral? If a Mod wishes to poll this, they're more than welcome.

You get best marks if you wear merch from a side project of one of the band members, failing that an associated band. Second best marks for if you wear old merch for the band. Never wear newer merch.

Nah that makes you a keen-o! It’s better to be contrarian… wear a Madonna t-shirt to a Cannibal Corpse gig etc. … or maybe that’s worse… ooooOooO look at me :o :p

I tend to not like wearing merch of the band I’m seeing to the gig, unless it’s a legacy gig which is sort of ‘fancy dress’ showing appreciation. When I saw Guns n’ Roses when they did their reunion, almost everyone was wearing something and quite a few people dressed up as Slash etc., it was pretty fun.

Went to see The Black Crowes at the Barrowlands, errr many years ago. Probably around 1990. Bought a t-short of the support band Burning Tree. Great little three piece who all sang Hendrixy style rock. It felt much cooler than a Black Crowes tee. Felt even cooler when we bumped into the band at the bar after they finished their set. 18 month later Marc Ford the guitarist, joined the Black Crowes but really he was too cool for that band.
Go with the support!

My first thought on seeing the thread title was wearing gear for a rival band… like wearing a Blur top to an Oasis gig in 1995 or something.

Yea I tend to wear t-shirts of another but similar type band.

One of the many times I have seen Steel Panther, I wore a Tiger Woods T-shirt.

You'll need to be familiar with their music to get that.

I was supposed to see them in London last Friday but had to cancel, how were they???

I generally go out of my way to wear something from the band I'm seeing, or at least adjacent to it. I would rarely wear those same shirts outside of a gig though. A lot of them are kinda rubbish quality with direct-to-garment prints that barely last a couple of washes.

I don't usually buy this stuff for this reason. It just falls apart and looks dire so quickly

I like to buy merch and t-shirts to wear round the house regardless of the price, particularly when it’s a smaller band because the majority goes direct to the band. Every little helps them these days.
