Do lots of young people not work these days ?

it's not all doom and gloom, ok it's not going to be a huge percentage but Tesco train their store/office/warehouse staff to become HGV Drivers. Not 9-5 Mon-Fri but they're on good money, most will be on higher rate tax and it's not a stressful job, lots of downtime...

there must be similair opportunities in other sectors??
If tesco are training them it's not for the good of the staff, it's because Tesco are having trouble getting HGV drivers in from outside and someone has done the maths that training up (and locking in the inexperienced drivers for a while*), is cheaper than paying more to external companies. Even just having the newly qualified drivers working at the depots as shunters etc is probably a big saving on hiring experienced drivers.

Most companies don't seem to have the foresight, or the will to make that sort of investment.

*IIRC many HGV drivers struggle to get the better/more reasonable jobs until they've got a track record.

Any job can be stressful, the duties are only part of the role. Team, boss, work culture etc can all make what seems like an ideal role a nightmare.

Cleaning isn't stressful at all. The only stress is the usual idiot general public if you do retail cleaning (and the usual power hungry micro manager idiots) ..but it's nice if you work in a posh head office or something like that (free cakes as well)

"if you work in.."

Yet growing up I lived next to a cleaner who worked in schools where they wouldn't even supply her with proper cleaning materials, she had to buy her own or it would take too long to properly clean the rooms.

As I said - any job CAN be stressful. It doesn't mean they are by default.

the ones I worked at generally was fine for supplies, no way would I bring in my own materials - and you would be in breach of COSHH doing that (chemicals or even own vacuum cleaner, would need to be PAT tested) and probably disciplined or dismissed.

Boring for long shifts, not using brain or skills etc but I recommend it who is semi retired/retired or had enough with office politics/career progression, no stress, health issues related to stress etc, just do a couple of hours and go home.

yeah they're not doing it for any other reason, point is the opportunity exists

also the experience thing - you don't need 20years driving trucks to be a good driver, a switched on 'newbie' with a couple of months experience is more than capable

On the same note most first companies will not touch a driver until they are 21 minimum and most 25 for insurance purposes so for a young person they have to find something else to do for 7 years. In those 7 years you might as well study for something else that pays more.

It is pretty mad to let a fresh pass 18 year old out in a truck when you think about it.

To be fair age doesn't necessarily mean good experience :( awhile back we had a guy in his 50s who was all talk about how he'd driven trucks all over the world, etc. had an entirely avoidable crash 3 days in and his standard of driving and attitude on the road was shocking... if I'd had my way he'd have been out the door on day 1, sadly the managers were hoping and praying it would work out because we were desperate.

They might be more inclined to have kids if there was a bit more hope of life being remotely affordable.

It seems vaguely reminiscent of it being hard to get animals to mate in captivity because they’re too stressed out by their surroundings.
This actually made me laugh a bit.

I can speak for myself i'm mid 30's no kids, reason? pretty much as you have summed up there. I often wonder if it'll regret never being a father?

But thats a topic for another day.

Might I ask why you are being held in captivity?

We had one person couldn't even use a screwdriver LOL. Totally useless. Also where my brother works the person didn't know how to screw in a bolt, clockwise/anti clockwise.

And the job I had in had so called trained people who were dangerous and totally clueless putting general public lives at risk.

Brother, you screw screws and you bolt bolts. You don't screw bolts. /pedantic

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck?
I suppose it depends if the woodchuck could chuck wood.

I have to say that out and about I see a lot of young people working and can't really see any difference in the levels of employment amongst young people compared to 30 years ago. The jobs have changed of course, and it is also far harder to get a job, or indeed employ someone, with the massive increase in bureaucracy seen in all areas of the working environment. We employ over 130 people and I can tell you that the younger members of staff can be a lot easier to manage than some of the older ones!

And cheaper.

Because they don't know employment rights
Willing to do whatever is told even though illegal instructions which could lead to injury to themselves or others (or worse) misconduct, dismissal if something goes wrong.
Willing to brown nose the boss, promises of promotion
More willing to be swayed to take on more roles & responsibility for no further pay increases
Willing to work past the shift time
Desperate for money so willing to do overtime
Paid less
Just setup a mortgage for their first house so would do anything.

Older staff simply won't take the crap from abusive or corrupt managers, in unions, can easily walk out, or semi retired so if nonsense happens they just walk out.

What a crap poem.
