If tesco are training them it's not for the good of the staff, it's because Tesco are having trouble getting HGV drivers in from outside and someone has done the maths that training up (and locking in the inexperienced drivers for a while*), is cheaper than paying more to external companies. Even just having the newly qualified drivers working at the depots as shunters etc is probably a big saving on hiring experienced drivers.it's not all doom and gloom, ok it's not going to be a huge percentage but Tesco train their store/office/warehouse staff to become HGV Drivers. Not 9-5 Mon-Fri but they're on good money, most will be on higher rate tax and it's not a stressful job, lots of downtime...
there must be similair opportunities in other sectors??
Most companies don't seem to have the foresight, or the will to make that sort of investment.
*IIRC many HGV drivers struggle to get the better/more reasonable jobs until they've got a track record.
