New Monitor Without Sound

My computer man ordered a new monitor for me but there is no sound coming out of it. After investigation I see that my HP 24 inch FHD Monitor has no sound. In the write-up it says that it has a 1xHDMI 1.4 and 1xVGA port and I've looked at various speakers on Amazon but all of them have said they were not compatible with my monitor. I don't want big speakers, just something more discreet. Will I just have to buy what I like without compatibility and also a lead which converts to what I need? Please be gentle with me as I am 80 and trying my best.

Monitor is for pictures.
Speakers are for sound.
Some monitors have speakers built in but most don't.
The monitor connects to the pc/laptop.
The speakers connect to the pc/laptop.
The most common speaker connection is 3.5mm audio jack, small round and typically green colored.
There are other types of speaker connections, usb and Bluetooth, but that probably isn't what you need.

Overclockers UK don't seem to sell cheap speakers, and this forum has a rule about not advertising competitors. Basic speakers can be had for about £20.

If you get speakers you connect them to the audio ports on the PC not the monitor.

What's the model number of your monitor? It sounds like your monitor has no built in speakers

I have checked and it doesn't have speakers.

That's no great loss anyway as monitor speakers are generally awful. You are much better off with seperate speakers or a headset.

If you just want some basic sound then these will do the job but they won't sound particularly great. Personally I like to have a decent sound setup for my pc but that costs a lot more. There are some half decent sets around for £50-70 but I am guessing you don't want anything like that so the ones I linked to or something similar will do the job for you. If you listen to music, game or watch movies on your pc I would get something decent.

Was about to say the same thing, monitor speakers are normally terrible, low power things so some external speakers would be better
