*** ROG XBOX Ally X Discussion Thread ***

I cancelled my Currys order in the end once I got my LeGo2. This has reviewed real well though so enjoy it you managed to snag one!

Still processing this morning. What are the chances this is getting delivered tomorrow? :D

Just picked mine up.

First thing I do, upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro

What are the benefits of upgrading to Pro? I can only see gaining bitlocker encryption?

None - I had the same thought myself, seems a very odd thing to do for a games console. Not like you're going to be domain joining it and running GPOs

Could be an objective if using the Ally as an actual desktop I suppose, if that way inclined. Drive Encryption is enabled by default on the Allys in any case even on Home.

As a console, and wanting the actual Asus/Xbox experience as labelled on the box, having all the relevant software installed may be a bit more problematic if putting a clean Pro install on. Messing with it the last day ahead of installing a new SSD and I've found it surprisingly clunky, probably due to other Windows updates installed. Unresponsive Armoury Crate command center, Steam not starting unless in Windows mode etc, unable to reinstall AC widget after uninstalling etc (TBF a complete uninstall and reinstall of AC may well fix that, but cant be bothered if doing the SSD after - just odd the widget is not available to download)

Actual performance seems fine the little games I've tried, but it's still a device that requires more than a little hands-on for anyone walking in first time and expecting a Deck-style introduction

Remote desktop which I use all the time, cant do it with the home version.

Noticeably smoother initial install after changing the SSD and doing a cloud recovery - the pre-installed image on the included 1TB SSD is probably much older - kind of obvious given the lengthy update process out of the box, but even so it was still on 24H2 despite seeking out updates.
After doing the cloud recovery, the proper 25H2 update is picked up during the setup and installs as expected before you're even presented with the FSE - Armoury Crate is far more responsive after doing it's updates - even picked up a Bulwark Dock update that has been out since July but wasn't been detected before.
Helps of course to have the Ally on the latest firmware from the initial setup. Hopefully have a decent shot at installing stuff tomorrow and give it a proper runout.

I did a full upgrade to 25H2 and latest firmware before I did anything else.

Had a quick test, happy I can play Expedition 33 on the on a handheld as I have GamePass version.

Setting up Lunchbox now for the emulators as I problems with Steam Deck accessing my network directories which I run all my images from.

I've seen a couple of initial reviews that indicate the performance is considerably less on battery power Vs mains connection.

I'd be interested to know from owners whether this is a noticeable issue in general use and also whether the downgrade in performance is due to battery efficiency settings that can be changed by the user to remove the performance nerf.

Seems like everything is affected, SSD speeds, CPU, GPU etc.

I'd also be interested to know if the "trimmed down" version of windows it uses can still have productivity apps installed like MS office etc and that they work as expected.

I can confirm this version of windows still has all the junk ware. It's still Windows 11 Home at the end of day..lol

It's still Windows 11, so anything you can run as per desktop Home flavour, can be run as normal if you run in Windows mode. By default, the FSE (full screen experience) is enabled, so it prevents a number of processes from running until you choose to go to 'desktop' mode. There is a new settings screen that allows you to determine what processes/apps start when you go to the desktop, so you can still have a certain level of control over what runs and when it runs - and thats before the use of one of those third-party windows configurators etc
It's not a 'new' version or cutback model of Windows in that sense, just an effort to minimalize it to console-like experience. If you want to operate it as a normal Windows device, that shouldn't be an issue.

Frankly, I don't think they are quite there yet by any means out of the box, but I suspect once you have it setup and installed, the trimmed down side of it should be usuable enough and hopefully a more seamless flow between apps will come via updates. Certainly the previous Allys needed work to get to the point of pick up and play, and it still applies here, which could be a shock for anyone expecting a console-like experience from the getgo.

I still don't get how this is on the console forum section and people are talking about upgrading windows 11 etc and Steam Deck which a much more 'console like' experience is in the PC Games section? how does that make sense? As expected a lot people on social media platforms thinking that it was actually a portable xBox!

Thats fair enough, but thats a question for the OP as there's 7 pages up to now :)

As for people's expectations - well, Xbox/Asus can take most of the repsonsibility, sure, as that's the brand direction they've taken for better or worse. Of course, they could argue the diversification of the Xbox brand allows them that latitude as, after all, you are downloading Xbox (PC) games, much like if they had ever released that standalone streaming console a couple year back, they could also argue 'you can play your Xbox games on this device' - with the T&Cs specifying how.

It's certainly a question that has arisen among the relatively uninformed, which they've probably made allowance for in marketing terms, and while I'd never dismiss that cohort as a significant portion of the potential customer base, I would also push back a little on expecting people to take repsonsibility and know what they are putting up to 900 euro down for.

Because that's exactly what Microsoft is marketing it as. An Portal Xbox, not an handheld laptop which runs Windows.

Well mine arrived on Saturday at around 7pm.

Took a while to update and install everything, still getting my head around a few things to be honest like remapping controllers and finding the best power profiles to run everything at.

I'm playing Hogwarts Legacy and although I've not got a frame counter on or anything it seems to be running very smoothly at the 40fps 1080p medium settings.

It's exactly what I wanted though. A way to play my game pass games when I'm not able to go on my Xbox. I know it'll only run the PC versions but a lot of the games these days are Xbox Play Anywhere and it can obviously run other storefronts if you so choose.

Ergonomically it feels a lot more comfy than my steam deck. I loved the deck but this feels a step up (I know it should because it costs a lot more too!). Very happy would recommend it for anyone who wants to play gamepass games without needing an internet connection. Yes it's pricey but it's spot on so far.

That may be true for Microsoft Game Studio titles, but not many 3rd party games.
I think a lot more are starting to get on board to be fair.

I'm certainly happy with whats coming down the pipeline with Final Fantasy 7 remake coming next (3rd party wise) for me.
