Best place to sell domain names

Over the years I've collected quite a number of domain names, these are mainly based around travel and take away food.

The reason for collecting them is I'm a software developer, I purchased them many years ago intending to use but never did.

I'm thinking of selling some of my domain names but unsure of the best approach. I was trying to find a website that was trusted that could sell these for me.

Does anyone have any recommendations.

Many thanks

check with some reddit autists as it will likely depend on the domains and how quickly you want to sell

if they're dot com domains and two dictionary words or one single non-dictionary word* then they might well be worth something

if it's not a dot com but it's one of the few popular alternative TLDs and a single dictionary word or (short) two word or non-dictionary word then it might also be worth something

Check out HugeDomains.com for examples - they're a big speculator/dropcatcher and you can see the sort of domains that have some value but don't expect you'll necessarily get the same sort of prices they try to charge and also note they're being quite speculative too, they'll drop plenty of their stock if it doesn't sell/doesn't seem to attract interest. So something might sell for a few thousand (and quite possibly be haggled down) but a load more might just not sell (despite being listed for that amount and being of a similar format) and just get dropped.

(*obvs a single dictionary word .com is worth a lot but it's much less likely you have one of those)

If you're not in any rush then keeping a landing page offering the domain for sale could be the way to go - *if* it's a good domain (as per the above) that's going to attract people who want that specific domain - alternatively you can list for free on the likes of sedo etc.. (then pay a commission) - or you can pay for an auction... but if it's not worth much then the fees will take a big chunk - domains that might be worth a couple of grand for someone who waits might only be worth a few hundred dollars at most in an auction when the owner wants to sell quickly.

Lastly - plenty of domains just aren't worth the registration fee - they might have been worthwhile for a particular project but beyond that not worth much at all.

or even just something somewhat descriptive like

XXXXX.com (non-dictionary word - but pronouncable/potential brand neologism)

XXXXXXX.com (two short dictionary words)

XXXXX.ai (one dictionary word)

etc..

Post your 5 best so we know whether you're deluded or not.
takeawayfoods.co.uk
takeawayfoods.com
vacationholiday.co.uk
vacationholidays.co.uk
yourgetaway.co.uk
yourmenu.co.uk

I'm sitting on those and a few more. Should I even not sell them and create one of those re-direct websites with them?

Have you ever had any interest in these domains?

Yes, around 12 years ago a food company wanted to buy takeawayfoods.com, they offered around $2000 at the time, but I rejected it. But they have never been advertised or anything done with them, just parked up.

You're well past the heyday of domain names, but some do still sell for good money.

takeawayfoods.com is your best, it may have some value. You might find a buyer. If you actively marketed it to relevant companies, your chances of a good sale increase.

The problem with selling domains is that they are very illiquid! You can only ask a good price when someone expresses interest in it (if ever).

There is a .co.uk domain forum, where you might get advice, but it's a bit dead these days:

https://domainlore.uk/ for .uk auctions.

For advice on .com

dnforum.com

takeawayfoods.co.uk - a little value, £60 if you're lucky
takeawayfoods.com - some value with active marketing (to take away food manufacturers), if you're lucky
vacationholiday.co.uk - no value
vacationholidays.co.uk - no value
yourgetaway.co.uk - a little value, £30 if you're lucky
yourmenu.co.uk - a little value, £30 if you're lucky

Or hold and hope for that dream offer which may never come!!

I used to do a lot of domaining but gave up about 10 years ago.

Did you counter offer?

At that time, generics could be sold for great money, but less easy now. Contact them again?

Those are generic, but none the less its possible they would work for somebody. I sold a few over the years, but each time it was people being directed to me either from the holding page or my details held on the domain name registrar, in other words they initiated the contact based on checking on the availability of a particular name. In one case I registered an hotel name that I saw being built in Bulgaria, who showed no interest, but a new build in Malaysia of the same name made an enquiry many years later.

Just personal taste here but I don't think much of vacaitonholiday as a name

I think you could build a UK business around yourmenu.co.uk but I'm not sure it's worth much as a speculative domain.

takeawayfoods.com is the only .com mentioned and you say you've had an offer so maybe you could get something for it but takeawayfood.com would sound more natural - no one says shall we go out to get some takeaway "foods". Both are grammatically correct and "foods" obvs can refer to different types of "food" but it's a long domain and less appealing than the version without the "s".

I don't think you'd get anywhere near 2k USD for that if you stuck it in an auction but if you're willing to wait then maybe you can stick a generic site up/ChatGPT logo generated for you etc.. on GitHub Pages and have a "buy this domain" contact form.
