I find the whole tape thing hilarious really and I'm not gonna condemn RB for trying.

Says a lot about the current state of the massive cars that teams have to resort to such things in the first place.

Drivers cant even see the grid lines

It's the height of bad sportsmanship.

Less about the size and more about how low they sit for aerodynamic and safety reasons.

Well yes they got fined for entering the track. But the point still stands as to why RB feel the need to resort to underhand tactics like that. Had Norris been over his marker that would be what a 10sec penalty? Could have quite the impact on the race.
It's amazing that you both understand and don't understand the situation at the same time.

Bit pointless though. No amount of tape is going to make Norris have better starts.

It's the height of bad sportsmanship.

The fact it's reached this point and the games have happened on multiple occasions across various teams who reportedly do this practice (People only care now because RB got caught trying to re-access the grid) show how much thought has gone into it.

I can just picture the meetings post race.

Lando post Baku - The tape was missing

Mclaren R+D - We will use stickier tape

Lando post Singapore - Someone removed the tape

Mclaren R+D - We will use even sticker tape.

Lando post USA - RB got caught, how can we remedy this?

Mclaren R+D - We will paint the line on with extra dayglow arrows just to be safe and recruit an apprentice to watch the line for mystery RB clothed jet washers.

This is the pinnacle of modern F1, bad sportsmanship and trying to get a one up over your competitors even if you are in the right or wrong.
Toto a few years ago with the Merc's kangarooing is a clear example of bad sportsmanship, boy am I glad DTS got front row access to that exchange.

It seems common knowledge that other teams apply these methods to help their drivers hit the mark - but theres no evidence that other teams have resorted to tampering like RB.

Most fans would agree that tampering like that is bad sportsmanship and very underhand. But now we'll have 3 pages of arguments where the usual three or four posters defend it as "part of modern F1, look at XYZ" and then an admin will get bored and close the thread :)

EDIT: lol

I'm now going to go on a mad google/twitter session as I'm sure I've read about similar this weekend :o :D If I have made it up I'll edit my post.

If I was another team I'd just add extra lines of tape next to the original line of tape for a laugh as they left the grid. Ooo which one could it be?!

Maybe I'm just being flippant because I've mostly lost interest in this season already, I've never been a Max fan but I hope he does it this year. Mclaren have been too nicey nicey.

When you job rides on millions of dollars based over a few points, this is what happens. A race to the top, politics will always get involved when a factory worth of people's jobs depend on it.
I'd rather have an understanding, than a biased and comical view of things.

RB got fined for going back on the grid, nothing about the tape being removed. Norris still need tape after being in F1 for 6 years? Embarrassing.

38 points left in race wins for this season. Max is now only 40 points behind Oscar and 26 behind Lando. Going to be very interesting!

Interesting, but everything has to go perfectly for Max still. It might, but one bit of bad luck or a technical issue (which I don't think he's had yet) likely ends it.

He had everything go his way his weekend. McLarens taking each other out in the sprint, and Leclerc nullifying any threat from Norris. He's also very fortunate McLarens drivers seem quite evenly matched. If they had a clear no.1/faster driver, he's have lost it already.

No doubt that Max is on top form at the moment. He's just not putting a foot wrong.

Good result for Ferrari for 2nd in the constructors. Mercedes seemed fairly ordinary this weekend.

Quite and this form of 'tampering' probably occurs more often than not.
Only it's Red Bull so it must be worse.
If I was them instead of removing any tape I'd move it forwards by a foot.

Tampering and crying to the stewards is undertaken by each team, some members debate this because it posts a negative light on their team, but they're all at it.

Imagine having a job for 6 years and still needing guidance on where to "park".

And do you know for sure no other team run some sort of procedure so as the drivers can position their cars correctly.
Perhaps the tape is so Lando can get his car as forward in the grid spot as is possible. Considering how difficult it is to see outside the cockpit I'm really not surprised at any method really.

If moving a piece of tape, which is completely legal, has the chance to give your immediate competitor a major disadvantage, why wouldn't you do it?

We know it's not about the tape though - it's the same old tantrum over RB because AD21 still haunts his dreams.

Didn't they make the lines longer couple of seasons ago? Or was it just a specific track. Maybe they should just extend them everywhere if it's so hard for the drivers to see and job done

I hear you, but considering these drivers can spot a braking point at 200+mph.
I am sure he can find a reference point for getting to a stand still.

We know it's not about the tape thoug
Never was, never will be. But they'd defend their team doing the same thing without hesitation. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Can spot a braking point going stupid speeds, but cant reference a point on the grid when you're slowing to a stop.
Embarrassing.

Have you thought about why they are able to consistantly spot braking points going stupid speeds ?

There are these marker things on the side of the track which they use as a visual reference/aid...

Also it's clearly not easy to nail lining up the start hence these comments from Russell

"It's incredibly difficult," reported Russell. "We're sat so low and to put some perspective [on it], we only see probably the top four or five inches of the tyre so you can't actually see the ground itself.

"We've got these big and long yellow lines pointing out. I can't even see the yellow line, let alone the white lines determining your lateral position.

"It’s really, really tough so that's why I think in this regard we need to show a little bit more common sense."
