I've pretty much decided I'm switching to the PS from XBox when the PS6 comes out but half tempted to get a PS5 to build up a back catalogue. Having said that I probably shouldn't. I always spend my money impulsively.

Not a bad time to jump in, as I’ve seen some deals recently for a base digital for £330 (or similar discount for the base disc). The launch price was £360, but they’ve increased it a couple of times since to £430 now, which is nuts!
The Pro is way too overpriced for what it is for me, and I’ve been more than happy with the base but obviously YMMV.

There’s a pretty decent backlog of first party games to catch up on (especially if you didn’t have a PS4), and you should be able to pick most of them up fairly cheaply in the regular sales, unless you’re interested in a PS+ subscription.

Thank you. Yeah having the PS4 back catalogue as well sounds good. I haven't had a PS since the PS2. Always been an Xbox person.

Better to jump in when you can than waste money on a dying ecosystem. With Black Friday sales looming it's probably not a bad time to start thinking about making that jump.

Makes sense. I'll need the disc drive though as I have loads of DVDs and Blu-rays.

It's not that expensive and isn't hard to find. Are you planning to sell your Xbox to offset costs ? When I sold my Series X almost a year ago and traded in my OG PS5 that almost covered the cost for a PS5 Pro.

I don't think I'll sell it. Might give it to my sister instead.

Been thinking about picking up a PS5 when I get back at Christmas time, but can't decide what version to get. Looking at digital but games prices... they're expensive compared to what I'm used to on PC!! Got a 4K blu-ray player so won't even use the console for those, but also rocking an OLED that can do 4K/120FPS, which I assume the base and slim can do for most games? Been a few years since I had my Series X so I've been out of the console game a while...

Cheers in advance. :)

Regardless of which SKU you settle on most games will not be running at 4K/120fps. The base model commonly offers 4K/30fps, 4K/40fps ( if your display is VRR capable) and 4K/60fps. This will vary depending on the game. The PS5 Pro is more performant and reaches the 4K/60fps target more often than not and provides better ray tracing capabilities. The Series X is about on par with the base PS5 with respect to performance. If having high FPS is a major priority then the PS5 Pro model is your only option really … or sticking with a medium to high end PC.

If you don't mind selling games on after finishing them you'll soon make back the £70 a disc drive costs

Okay, that's some good info to know. Can't say I'm fixated on frame rates but a smoother high frame experience in GT7 would be nice.

That's part of the thought process to be honest! Do you still install games to the hard drive and run off there (with disc check at game start up)?

Struggling to make up my mind. PS5 Standard (with disc drive) or PS5 Pro (and get the disc drive at a later date). I feel like I'd enjoy the Pro more but my wallet says it is not a great deal.

Yeah it's been that way since PS3? Certainly PS4

Thought it was, but for some reason there I was just questioning it all. Cheers for the help :D
Just a tip but the game collection is awesome for physical games, always good prices tho sometimes they don't get certain games until after release (like recent Sky 1st chapter steelbook)

Consider that the Pro model also comes with 2TB storage so that may save you having to buy an additional SSD from the outset. Personally I think the Pro is a decent upgrade on the base model as more titles are taking advantage of PSSR ( Sony's AI upscaler ) and will be getting a further update, based on the collaboration with AMD, in a few months time.
