car insurance after redundancy

A friend of mine has been redundant for 6 months now and has just realised their insurance may be void. The annoying thing is she keeps getting various temp jobs for 4 weeks or so and technically she is meant to update her insurance every time at the start and end of the job (at a cost of 2 x £20 due to 2 cars she drives).

As someone facing redundancy myself in a few months, this seems a crazy situation and is kind of a disincentive to getting short term contracts whilst looking for a "proper" job. Has anyone here been in a similar situation, were they able to find a way around paying significant fees updating their policy every few weeks or do people just pretend not to notice and not update their policy? (something i am not gonna do as i do not want a void insurance)

I dunno about the legal technicalities, but I'd probably keep shtum... they aren't going to know unless you tell them. If you get to the renewal date, then I'd change my occupation to what was correct at that time.

Isn't the premium going to change though - between unemployed and a low risk engineering occupation say ?
At least with aviva they haven't charged me on adjustments to current policy made online - car change(just a pro-rata on premium), nearby move, never tried an occupation update though.

Unofficially from someone who used to underwrite motor and personal insurance unless you misrepresented yourself at renewal a change of circumstances mid term isn't going to invalidate your policy.
that is good to hear. obviously i am not gonna hold you to it but it is kind of how i hoped it would be.

I got a severe telling off from my insurer when I was redundant for a couple of months and did not realise that would be a problem. I only had a month or two left on my policy and had to pay extra premium as a result. Being unemployed is a higher risk factor apparently

I never told them either lol. The money grabbers can do one.

You could always just register a LTD company and pick any title you like. And obviously anyone with a PhD is a "doctor" ;)

You are never "unemployed". The government doesn't consider people unemployed unless they claim benefits, so why should we.

I never told my insurance company when I was made redundant, I did however change my job to IT contractor and have only just changed it now I'm an employee again

I just put IT contractor or consultant, as I'm between jobs/semi retired/don't claim benefits but would take the right work.

"we're sorta like 7-11, we're not always doin' business, but we're always open" ;)

Umm.. why?
read your paperwork. perhaps you don't on your policy but on a lot it stipulates any change in employment needs to be notified and will have a cost to update as well as potential premiums change.
whether they enforce it or not is another matter and it appears perhaps they don't.

I noticed premiums are higher when "unemployed" because apparently you'll be using the vehicle for job seeking.

ummm.nope.

years ago I moved house from centre of Cambridge to a small village. I told the insurance and they put up my premium due to living in a higher risk postcode (it wasn't).
6 months later on the same policy I moved back into the same room of the same house I left in Cambridge.... and they put it up again due to higher risk area. I called them on it and they said our postcodes are evaluated continually. yeah right!.
I left at renewal.

I'm not even surprised. Legalised extortion.

I've noticed also if you are with one which has online/self management and you make a change which means you get a refund (e.g. lower the miliage by a lot or remove a driver), if you then leave it without paying and go back the next day it changes to you owing them lol. So you need to get it in straight away. Clearly they are being notified and fiddling it.

I wouldn't bother for the sake of 4 weeks, but on renewal, absolutley do inform of the change of circumstances. Change of address I'd guess is more of a biggie if you are moving to a lower or higher risk post code.

changng employment from 'office worker' to 'administration worker', for example, not so much as they are such 'wooly' job titles anyway.
