Burcu Yesilyurt, who poured coffee down a drain in Richmond, welcomed the cancellation of the "disproportionate" fine.

What would the OcUK reaction be to this? Give them a piece of your soy decaff pumkin-spice addled mind? Pour the enforcement officers down the drain?

Earlier, a Richmond Council spokesperson said body-worn camera footage had been reviewed and they did "not agree that officers behaved aggressively".

"Footage confirms the officers acted professionally and were sensitive to the circumstances," they added.

I'd argue that a lone woman being approached by three "enforcement officers" and threatened with a £150 fine for no sane reason is inherently aggressive, I can totally understand why someone might be shaken up by this.

The amount of times I've seen gangs of young men day-drinking (or worse) in the streets and littering while police cruise by as though they don't exist is staggering.

You walk away from such "officers" they have no power to hold you, if you walk away they give up rather quickly.
They have to call the police to enforce such fines.

They are banking on you being a law abiding citizen to fine you.
Walk away and continue on with your day, they cant do a thing and will leave you alone.
 
Based on the fine Severn Trent got back in 2021 for sewage discharges, assuming less than 100ml of coffee was discharged down the drain the fine issued should have been no more than £0.42. This is based on coffee being as dangerous to the environment as untreated sewage, which it isn't if the enforcement officer was insisting it could have been disposed of in a regular bin.

This 100%, these people have no legal power to hold you. Simply tell them to go away and walk off.
 
Richmond and Kew are exceptionally nice areas, there's probably not much for the police to do from day to day, and thus you end up with bored jobsworths doing nonsense like this

I'm not paying it, take me to court... I think would be the response. Can't see it going far. Why did she even hand over her identity to 3 council wombles in the first place?

If they want to fine people for littering, they should stand within a 100 meters of a local shop and they'd make a killing picking off all the chavs throwing bottles and wrappers on the floor.

Welcome to the UK. Report a theft committed in full view of cctv and there's nothing the police can do, decades of mismanagement of water infrastructure in full view of the regulator and the water company might get a slap on the wrist if they're unlucky, but pour a drink down the drain and three enforcement officers are ready to grab you. Insane.

I had no idea it was illegal to pour unwanted beverages in the drain and honestly I doubt it actually is illegal, just a bunch of bullies thought they'd found an easy target.

I hear this frequently, but think their coffee is perfectly acceptable, and think their flat white is nicer than Starbucks. I haven't really bought coffee at a shop since I got my ninja luxe, but don't think Costa coffee is terrible by any stretch.

the real crime is how bad both of those places are at getting a nice microfoam on my flat white, they always blow too much air into it, it should be glossy and velvety, not car wash snow foam


thats the real crime, we need barristers to punish the baristas
