Hi,
I've had 32Gb in my system since it was built. But I've been considering going to 64.
However, with the current overprice of ram, is there any massive benefits to do so ? I play a lot of Star Citizen at 2k, and get told that 64Gb is adventageous.

Currently running a 7800X3D, 32Gb Corsair Dominator, 7900XTX but am just interested in the general opinions. Is 32Gb absolutely fine for the time being or is general computing, lazy coding and over demand meaning I should consider 64Gb, even if I wont see the advantages for a while ?

If you won't see the advantages in a while then don't spend the money.
If you're going to give in to the upgrade-itis then make sure you get at least 6000MT/s ram - SC seems to be as sensitive to ram speed as it is to quantity.

worth it for DCS Black Shark or even 96GB
lolwut 2008 game using 96GB. I know I know DCS is...different..but damn.

I wont know if I'll see any advantage ingame until I buy it ;)
More curious than anything, as that seemed to be the over riding opinion in chat. Just seemed excessive to me but willing to bite if there are real world benefits.

I guess if the overwhelming anecdotal evidence says you'll see a difference then you probably will.

If the price is a concern then 48GB kits are also a thing but it does smell like a bit of a stop-gap solution.

Yeah, 48Gb seems a bit like Iphone pricing .... We will bring in the 'Air', but if you want the large screen, you'll have to ge the pro max, no pro for you !

I guess I could get a few quid for my dominator pro to offset the cost and give it a go. Just dont keep up with PC stuff as much as I used to and was rather hoping I'd just be told that 32Gb is the bare minimum now ;)

I have read comments from people who play DCS who say that they have seen 48 GB+ RAM (maybe 54 GB) in use. As for Star Citizen, this thread from Reddit may be of interest: there too people say they have seen 48 GB in use.

You might also look at 128 GB kits (64 GBx2) if your motherboard will support it - RAM prices seem to be on the increase.

Thankyou for that, will have a read.

What has been the memory usage while you're playing?

I've been running 64gb since 2020.
same, a complete waste of time since i stopped running vms, never go over 24.

I understand larger RAM kits can have less wiggle room in timings, so along with wasted £, no point going overboard.
That said having to go to 4 stick in the future is even worse for memory stability (on AM5 at least)

currently running 64gb [4x16] and i dont use all of it as such ive regularly seen low to mid 50s though and well im getting more and more into slightly larger projects
so for me yes 64 has been almost essential as i do run over the 32 i would have had in my old system
my desk currently sports a packet of ram waiting for hte rest of the bits to go am5 and thats a 96gb kit but i didnt do it because i needed more than 64 i did it because it was a cracking deal
considering current prices lol.
in short basically
if your not using all of what you have just adding more is pointless.
like having a bus service that always has a max of 20 passengers if you have 22 seats no point in getting a bigger bus.
BUT
if you find your regularly having 25/30 people using this imaginary bus im using for this example
then you might find getting a 30 seat bus more usful if that makes sense
i doubt il ever actually be back in the situation of having to run to pagefile much with my 96gb kit though lol but i freely admit
that i didnt need to go up from 64... [mostly not for gaming hence why im using more than 40/50gb a lot of the time]

The answer is always going to be very grey as everyone's use case will be different.
For the average person, 32gb is sufficient.
If you play games that are memory hogs and/or do large file photo/video edits for example, and find yourself regularly running out of ram, then a ram upgrade is well worth the money.
Don't forget ram at any latency is still faster than a SSD/HDD.
It's better to have enough slow ram than insufficient fast ram.
