16GB to 32GB, is it worth it?

I currently have a LENOVO Legion 5 Gaming Laptop that has a Intel i9, an RTX 4070 and 16GB of RAM.

I would like to think that I can squeeze a bit more FPS out of it by upgrading the RAM but considering this is the most I've ever had I don't know if the additional 16GB will make that much of a difference.
Is it likely to make a big difference or am i just throwing money away for a 5 FPS boost

More RAM isn't something I'd target for more FPS, since it only helps if the game actually needs it. Though, if you have 16Gbit 8GB sticks it could help more than you'd think.

Gaming laptops usually come with such bad RAM that some can get a 10% boost just by replacing the rubbish 16gb kit with a faster 16gb kit.

I was thinking that the RAM might be just some random generic stuff, i will try and open it up if i get chance.

I'm not really sure what type would be a good replacement, is there much difference between the speeds of DDR5? I was thinking about 2x16gb 4800mhz of Kingston Fury or Corsair Vengeance

if you’re using more than 15gb regularly, then absolutely, the performance difference will be massive. If you’re using less than 15gb then no, the performance will be exactly the same.

I’m making a few assumptions here. Windows OS, dual channel etc.

It will depend what speeds are supported and what bios options you have. No point getting super duper over clocking ram if there are no options other than to run at SPD.

You don't need to open it up - running CPUZ or HWInfo should list the ram modules and reported speeds

I'll download CPUZ later and post the results.

Thanks

So the results from CPU-Z are that it is 2 8GB sticks of RAM.

The manufacturer is Micron and the part number is MTC4C10163S1SC56BD1.
The stats look to be 8GB, 2800MHz and PC5-5600.

Depending on what games you play it may well be worth the swap out to 32gb.
If you are indeed running out of ram, what you'd find when you upgrade to 32gb is actually that the minimum FPS improves and so you get a smoother experience, rather than an outright AVG FPS increase.

That being said, for that calibre of spec, it's a bit of a let down that there's only 16gb. I would upgrade to 32gb on that basis alone tbh

I play Hell Lets Loose the majority of the time on pretty much max settings with teamspeak running in the background.
I've been getting a few stutters which has made me think it might be the RAM as the FPS is solid.
Is there anyway to check what is compatible with mine, I'm pretty sure the Lenovo code is 83DG00D7UK which states it can take up to 64GB of 5600mhz.

Something like this? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cors...2x16gb-ddr5-5600-pc5-44800-mem-crs-04319.html

when the game is running, alt-tab and check in task manager if your ram is maxed out

laptop ram is normally pretty generic as nearly all laptops don't allow memory oc/tweaking. i'd just get the cheapest one with the correct speed and reasonable cas latency imo

The RAMs running at about 80%, according to task manager but i don't feel thats an accurate measure as I'm no longer running around in game and the screen is minimised.

Is there anyway to know the usage whilst in game?

If it's a Steam game, I believe they've recently upgraded their built-in overlay to show more system info, such as RAM usage.

Should be able to enable/customise it in the settings.

If not Steam, then MSI afterburner.

They look like they're 16Gbit, meh, more motivation to replace.

If the game is minimised it'll still be using the RAM, they don't release it when you ALT+TAB. It sounds to me like you need the upgrade, 80% is too high for comfort.
