Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [24th - 26th October 2025]

Have you seen how every team plays against us? It's tough to play free flowing football when there are 9 men behind the ball for most of the game.

Edit
8th in xg from open play so it's not like we're not creating.

I'm not sure thats quite the case and at any rate, all the best sides in the league each season face the same style of opposition. There is a reason Arsenal are singled out for it and its because no one else scores as many goals from set pieces or a few from open play at the top end of the league.

Some might suggest that a team that is so effective from corners and dead ball situations might play for them as well...

I don't think any Arsenal fan will care how bland the football is if they win the league. That is all what matters in the history books. Arsenal scored 15 more goals than Chelsea in 04/05 but it was Chelsea that won the league with a then record 95 points.

The highlight reels will be a touch dull though, eh?

It absolutely is the case in the majority of our games this season. Be interesting to see the stats of how many set pieces we've had compared to how many we've scored from and then see how the other teams compare. We're clearly better at them than other teams but we may also have more of them per game.

In a sense we are playing for them, but by attacking, not actively rebounding balls off defenders for corners or diving for fouls. Take the foul leading to our goal yesterday as an example, Saka gets fouled while running away from goal in what is a pretty stupid challenge, hardly played for. When teams play low block we inevitably end up in their 3rd which leads to the dead ball situations. We have been struggling to break teams down which is disappointing and we definitely aren't playing to Gyokeres' strengths or being particularly fluid in attack in general but at least we are able to keep winning games while not playing particularly well.

I think Arsenal have taken the view that it's difficult to open up teams, so they'd rather use set pieces to do it, which is fair enough. It's not pretty but I doubt anyone would truly care.

While they look very strong, this is really nothing new, it's towards the end of the season when the real tests will come. I think they need to try and open up a 10-12 point gap between now and the end of the year, that will give them a decent buffer when they have their characteristic wobble.

Their squad depth is great though and I think that will potentially see them over the line... Arteta is never going to have a better chance than this. Liverpool have fallen off a cliff, Man City still look hit and miss... and there's really nobody else to worry them. Well, aside from Man Utd's epic resurgence...

even as a city fan i dont think i can begrudge arsenal winning one, even though we just behind them, they playing decent football, if having a flutter i put a few quid on them, we just not ready this season again
