Starting to see tandem OLED monitors released here in the UK now - all 1440p 280hz at 27". The LG and Gigabyte models are both matte and the Asus model (not available until December) is glossy. Figured it would be worth starting a thread considering these will be increasingly more popular going forward.

The Gigabyte model is up (or was up!) for pre-order over on the rainforest for 500, haven't seen it available anywhere else yet though. The LG model is available from a few different stores in the UK and seems to be between 550-650 depending on the store/discount/current promotions and the Asus model I've not been able to find anywhere with even a listing.

I was super tempted by the Gigabyte model but the gimped HDMI 2.1 port slightly put me off, even though I think the stand/design on the Gigabyte model is probably the nicest and the price is pretty great too.

I ordered the LG model (27GX700A) which arrived today so looking forward to actually trying it later this week. The design of it is lovely, I like that the WOLED monitors don't tend to have any real bezel (compared to QD-OLED having that bottom chin) - and this LG model does have full spec HDMI ports. Also really keen to see how bright this thing really gets!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, the gigabyte is incredibly tempting given that £500 is my absolute max budget.

The glossy version from Asus is available for pre-order from a competitor as well for 520.

I’ll share some thoughts about the LG version but definitely going to be keeping it as my primary gaming monitor at this rate.

I’d love the glossy version but unfortunately Ive got no option but to have my pc in right by a large window in a well lit room.

It’s also unfortunate that the Gigabyte version has vanished from every retailers website overnight.

Is this the same panel that's in the Alienware AW2725D? 280Hz, 1440. I bought one the other day for £388, it's excellent

Nah, that one is the QD-OLED 1440p one. It's from the same 'generation' as the 360hz QD OLED ones - just a slightly 'slower' (if you can call losing 80hz slower) refresh rate.

Great monitor though, I had the 360hz one from Alienware for around a year or so and really enjoyed it.

So a few thoughts on the LG 27GX700A after using it properly now for both gaming and work on for about a week.

Text clarity:

For sure not as clear as IPS 1440p - but after a few hours you get used to it. I actually think for me now it's a non-issue. Firefox/Chrome all look fine to me, I've worked in Excel for 7 hours at a time without struggling with the clarity and text in games is no problem at all. It's definitely not as clear as 1440p IPS but I don't think it's that far away - and obviously 4k 27" oled/ips is another tier above and I think at some stage I'll go back to 4k 27" but right now 1440p is where I want to be gaming at.

Eye Strain

I guess a natural follow up to that is eye strain - which tends to be a bit of a common theme for some people on OLED monitors. The non-standard pixel layout is a contributing factor - but I've also personally always suffered more with eye strain on glossy panels. For me with this monitor, no issue at all with gaming or working or reading big amounts of text.

Finish

Matte panel - so not as clear as glossy - but personally what I prefer with the room I'm in. Glossy was just a bit too reflective of the main light behind me in the day time - and whilst it was fine at night it became a little irritating having to adjust my lights in the day time to make sure I didn't have the reflection on screen.

I would say that the matte finish on this monitor is nowhere in the same realm as matte finishes I've seen on previous IPS monitors (either the XG27ACS, XG27AQMR or LG27GP850) which all felt like they were a much 'stronger' matte coating.

Motion

Insanely nice. Obviously 280hz looks great at 1440p (wouldn't say 40hz is 'noticeable' over the 240hz to 280hz) but clarity in motion is really sharp. Even at 120hz on PS5 it looks really good.

Picture Quality

I also am 50/50 on whether I can notice the difference between 4k and 1440p during gaming. Definitely noticeable with general PC use and working on it - but for gaming I don't really notice it a lot in the titles I play. I think if I played slower more single player games it would probably be more noticeable about 4k but for me 4k was so good to work on and 1440p is noticeably worst for this.

Colours

I'm colourblind so am no help at all here. Colours look nice?

Brightness

this thing gets crazy bright, i actually have it at 40% brightness at the moment. compared to the first oled i tried in the past (LG27GR95QE) where i was 100% and even bought a service remote to bump it over 100% and remove the vignette effect on the corners. It's great how much OLED monitors have improved here in just 2.5 years.

With HDR its great, blinding in a great way. I've played a bit of Ghost of Yotei that looks stunning in HDR in specific night sections when there's little pops of explosions and fire. I don't use HDR on PC, only on PS5 Pro.

Design

Crazy nice design with the front panel looking no branding. Stand is big but mega sturdy and I have it on a monitor arm now anyway. It's a tiny thing but the rear ports are so much better being mounted in the way they are facing back and not down, makes it a lot easier to plug/unplug items in.

PS5

Mostly really great, only weird thing is occasional black screen? Unsure why, it happens when I launch a game and sometimes goes away if i just re-plug HDMI cable. Doesn't seem to happen all the time as well, probably once a week currently? Possibly firmware related so might see it fixed at some stage.

Overall really enjoying the monitor!

@TNA Nice write up on your new screen.

Overall, it seems very decent for your and your needs, a well balanced set of thoughts there.

Are you aware if there are any 4k screens being available using that technology yet.?
Good that you don't notice that much on have, from 4k to 1440p, but in other use....I understand.

Not even the first time I’ve seen someone credit @TNA with one of my posts..!

Thanks though mate, appreciate it. Apparently tandem WOLEDs for 4k res are on LGs panel roadmap - although it could be a situation where they’re announcing early next year and not sold until q4 2026.

Best person to ask on this is @Baddass !

It doesn't take much to confuse me.........
 :D

I'll not quote either of you, as I guess that I'll get it wrong.

Go on then.....

@t2na Appreciate the reply. Point taken about the possibility of the availablity of 4k.
I do like my 4k IPS, the in game menus, especially when playing city builders that have a larger visible UI, seem to leave more screen for the game against that of a 1440p.

I have two screens, both IPS. 27" 1440p and 32" 4k. I'm not sure how I would feel going to back to a 27" 1440p as a primary having monitor.....

I kinda wish that Windows would have allowed less than 100% scaling, as they used to at one point.
