EV general discussion

When did we get to a stage where we’ve accepted that having bad software is okay, from a dealership perspective?

The number of times VW have said to me “oh that’s probably a software issue”, like it gets them a free pass to not resolve it.

I don’t care if it’s mechanical or software - if something doesn’t work, it’s a them problem. I get it’s tricky to fix, but again, that’s a them problem.

Feels like it’ll get worse too, as cars become more reliant on it.

The same as computer games get half finished and un tested properly but they now know they can fix anything via an update.

When you test drive a car to now have to test drive the software. When I tested a ID3 the software was a pain as were the haptic buttons. I didn't want to get used to it.

criteria for rejecting a car needs to be more accurately legally defined with a few precedential test-cases.
epitomy of that : I don't know did tesla small print have a clear out for delivering the fsd functionality.

Haptic buttons are a hardware choice, not software.

When I test drove a bunch of cars recently (feb - may) I narrowed them down by driving feel, then when I had done that I tested the UI for about 15 - 20 minutes.

Sorry but I’m old school and want a nice car to drive and look at, the software is secondary and my Cupra Born has some of the worst user interface setups in all of cardom but it drives really well. So I still chose it over the Volvo EX30, MG4 and Megane e-tech despite it having the 2nd worse UI of the bunch. Software is meh to me because once you have the basics set you rarely touch anything.

Is yours not the facelift with update infotainment? Miles better

No, for my budget I had a choice between a 2023 77kWh V3 with the old UI and control system. Or a new 2024 model 58kWh with the new “improved” system. Frankly they were both terrible to use and the bigger battery was an easy choice.

Saying the new Cupra Born UI and system is better than the old 2023 one, is like saying a punch in the face is better than a kick in the balls. ;)

That's why I said "software was a pain AS WERE the haptic buttons.

I use the software a lot. Especially the maps and navigation for traffic and route finding around a city to unfamiliar locations. Changing it mid journeys is not unusual. I change music a lot also.

Don’t really see the problem with the new, it’s instant without delay, bigger screen and higher res. The old one was crap but I only really use car play

Odd analogy

I think software goes beyond infotainment, it’s also inverter control, BMS etc.

You don’t blame software for a slow touchscreen do you. That’s a hardware issue.

Anyway I’ll let you guys carry on complaining about stuff

Hardware and software combined are the system. Be it poor voice recognition or frequently used things buried in menus and sub menus. Or unresponsive hardware or software. Its all the ergonomics and UX.

On my car plugging in a android with a cable is horribly unreliable. Using Bluetooth Wifi adapter solved it. But I shouldn't need to do that.

The charging options on mine are more confusing than setting time recordings on an 80s VCR. I'm the only one in my family who can do it. That's crazy. I've it set it do they don't have to do anything just plug in.

The analogy was to show saying “improved” over the old system is a very low bar. Neither are ideal but one being “better” than the other is hardly an improvement. When you try a Google based system on the Volvos, or the new Google on Renaults, that is when you realise all versions of the Cupra UI are crap. They get the job done and are convoluted and poorly laid out, but they get the job done.

Brake pedal servo is faulty on the ID.7, requiring a full disassembly of the front of the interior of the vehicle to replace.

12v battery replaced.

Software update performed, allegedly fixing the issues with CarPlay location.

Then they’ll make their way through the rest of the issues.

Certainly hasn’t been a profitable car for VW!

I am not a massive fan of the VW software in my ID4. I find it slow and sometimes unresponsive to connect to Android auto. To me, it should be a few seconds after I enter the car and select my profile that it boots up, instead it can take up to 25 seconds (or longer) and then has often kicked me back to the selection screen for my phone.
Car itself has been fine since it's wobble a couple of weeks ago, although VW cannot get me a slot to investigate for over a month.
