The AMD Driver Thread

Hub's take

HUB noticed AMD's decision affects many APU's including the Steamdeck, which is now a legacy product in terms of optimisation

HUB is calling for AMD to immediately reverse its decision, at least for RDNA2 products

The greed of these companies know no bounds . AMD Radeon division loves to destroy their reputation and screw their customers. They need to reverse this or they can say goodbye to future customers.

I don't understand what people are complaining about after reading the replies from AMD_Vik. RDNA1 and 2 will continue to get security and bug fixes. Like they do now. And yeah I've had no new features although AFMF2.1 was something new quite recently. My card is nearly 6 years old. I'm not expecting much more from it.

Not like they do now. AMD provides game optimizations in its drivers for new popular games and these optimizations often improve performance a fair bit, some people even call it "fine wine". RDNA 2 will no longer receive these "fine wine" updates

Are game optimisations and bug fixes separate, sorry I read bug fixes as all encompassing. So it's security = yes, bug/issue fixes = yes but game optimisations = no? @AMD_Vik could you confirm also my understanding. Thanks.

TBH again if that is the case I'm still not 100% shocked by that. Like I say, 6 year old GPU, probably had to happen at some point. No fine wine lol but if the game crashes then I can still be safe knowing the issue would be fixed. Just no performance changes. I'm onboard with that.

Do both vendors not taper off game specific support around 5-6 years?

I would say normally at about 7-8 years or so. But typically you see people who don’t own a particular vendor card getting all up in arms over it. So yes we are a touch early on this for RDNA2 but it’s the faux outrage that gets me.

Maybe I'm misreading AMD_Vik's replies but it sounds like game optimisations are more general rather than card specific and the older cards will still get big fixes and security updates. So what's actually changing?

Nothing.

The story itself got rubbished within 5 mins of being released.

I was going to post but knew where this thread was going lol.

Not much to be fair. Nvidia had similar faux outrage for dropping older GPU game ready support on the 10x0 series recently.

It’s not like these older GPUs suddenly stop working and for the most part game devs have stopped optimising for GPUs long before driver support is reduced to bug fixes only.

Game Devs optimise?

A colleague of mine has attempted to launch the app just now, though they're hitting the following error related to EasyAntiCheat:
Are you seeing something similar or just a straight crash to desktop?
I'm seeing error 3221225477 and the game won't launch at all, but not a straight crash to desktop.
A lot of people are reporting the same since updating to 25.10.2
Going back to a previous driver doesn't work apparently
It seems to be a conflict between 25.10.2 and running the game in dx11
Changing it to run in vulkan solves it, as a workround.

From their bug reporting site;
'I switched from 0 (Direct3D11) to 1 (Vulkan) in “GraphicsSettings.json” (C:\Users\yourPC\AppData\Local\Star Citizen\starcitizen_(sc-alpha-4.1.1)_insyb_0\GraphicsSettings). After that, I was able to start SC without any errors.Important: pay attention to the date of the last folder!Switching back (to Direct3D11) in the SC options and restarting the launcher brought me back to the beloved error code. The result for me is that I can play SC under Vulkan, but not under Direct3D11.'

I'm going to try that now myself and suggest your colleague does the same

Been thinking about it a bit and I'm guessing a lot of the things coming in the Redstone update need the AI cores to run and that was the only work around.

Thanks. Yeah I totally agree.
