EV general discussion

Anyone had a look at or know much about the IM5 and IM6? Look to be sold through the MG group.
I'm pretty sure someone recently in this thread test drove one or both of them and posted some thoughts, might be worth having a search.

I've driven then both, I might be able to help. I did post in here about my thoughts on them from the test drives.
Will take a look back, I can get the IM6 long range on a decent deal making it a bit cheaper per month than a Enyaq 85 edition.

Don't even know where my closest MG dealership is.

Now I have the EV charger at home I’m wondering the best way to control the charging. I’m currently using the GivEnergy app to control when to charge in the middle of the night but I won’t be able to pre-condition off the grid before work in colder months this way. Is it best to set the charger to automatically plug in and charge as soon as a vehicle is plugged in and then control the charging from the Polestar app with a schedule so it will pre-condition off grid or will this still only charge between the times. Thinking I may have to have 2 schedules set.

How do others set this up?

Seeing a few reviews of the Alpine A390 GT and GTS popping up now, ahead of orders opening in early November.

What do people think of this?

The prices are very punchy - £60k (GT) and £70k (GTS)
The new BMW iX3 is cheaper and winning all the spec comparisons for me. Feels like the list prices need to be both £10k cheaper - Comes down to what the monthly cost will be.

I think it's definitely a heart over head purchase

I'd get that car just to pretend I'm a member of the Avengers .

Saw a brand I have never seen before in Tesco's car park yesterday, Leapmotor and on looking it up found it to be a B10. The interior looked extremely basic with just two tablet style displays, a small one in front of the steering wheel and a bigger one for a centre console. Big ugly looking car and the only thing I liked was the colour, sort of a dark british racing green.

Relatively ‘cheap’ for what you though, that’s the point of them.

People are into cheaper and basic, it’s basically the reason why the likes of Dacia exist.

exactly. for the longest of times all EVs tended to be premium with all the toys and a price to boot. it's good to see more affordable options even if it means a slightly cheaper finish and less toys. (wouldn't be for me tho. give me a 3 year old premium car over a brand new budget one. but to each their own - and without people buying those cheap new cars there would be no even cheaper market when those hit 3 years old.

Delayed for a week due to illness but we did our first long distance trip in the ID.3 this weekend from where we live to visit a friend in Holland and back, a bit under 600km (~370 miles) each way. It turned out to be pretty easy. We largely charged up at McDonalds, which nearly all have relatively cheap fast chargers over here, and apart from one where we turned up and discovered the free charger was broken it was pretty easy. Helped that there was a slow charger where we were staying so we could leave it overnight to fully charge before we left. Overall, it did add some time to the journey, I reckon around an extra 30-40 minutes which was not a bit deal on a nine hour journey that we do occasionally but I guess would become irritating if you needed to do this kind of journey often especially as it wasn't that optional, whereas we could have cut a stop short by, e.g., taking the coffee with us to finish in the car we had to sit and drink it while the car charged. So we could have shaved off another 20 minutes or so in an ICE if we really wanted and maybe another 10 minutes because we drove more slowly on the autobahns to extend the range.

Up to now, I've always been unbothered by the range on the ID.3 but I think I'd like a little more if we were going to do this more often. Not so much necessarily to drive longer in a stint -- we try to keep the stint time down between driver stops anyway -- but so we could cut a stop down to a quick wee and driver swap rather than needing to wait for a charge.

Still, overall, my takeaway was that I'd be completely happy to do more long trips in the EV. Although it was longer, it was also a easier and more relaxing drive than the ICE cars I've had -- that's partly down to tech like radar cruise control that you can get just as easily in ICE but the smoother, quieter drive also makes a big difference. We're now thinking about taking the car over to the UK for Christmas/NYE on the ferry rather than flying over and hiring a car like we usually do.

This is something i've been weighing up. I'm in the market and i keep telling myself range isn't that big a factor when comparing a few options, but then i think how i'd like to keep this car for 7+ years and how habits might change.

Think i've decided on the Skoda Elroq 85, the range is the highest of my other options, and i think i've decided to take the trade off of the lower spec on the Skoda over something like the MGS5/BYD Atto3

I guess it depends what kind of driving you do but, for me, it's still not something I'd prioritise. Like, I'd like a bit more range but it wouldn't change my order of preference unless I was already unsure which car I preferred over another and I wouldn't be willing to pay much more for it. If the range was less than the ID.3 though, yeah, that'd be a problem.

what was the update on the failed update/tow you mentioned - did VW have a confident explanation/future recommendation, like don't do it near a big trip.
