Anyone been scammed buying hardware recently?

Over the years I have heard of iPhones being swapped out, GPUs replaced with items with similar weight and all sorts from Amazon and on top of that people having issues getting a refund after.

If I buy PC parts then I stick to places like OCUK but avoid amazon for any expensive items in fear of not getting what I paid for and then having issues getting a refund or even worse not getting 1 at all.

Glad you got a refund with very little effort though

Recently bought a Samsung 2TB 870 Evo, arrived in Chinese marked box, a quick search showed the serial to be all over the interweb. Seller had been banned when I asked for refund about half hour later, had full refund issued as soon as package was scanned.

Not recently, however, back in December 2015, a warehouse deal on an EVGA GTX 980, when they had that extra 20% off the prices. When I opened the EVGA box, there was a GTX 460 or 470. ****** refunded me straight away.

I kicked up a fuss about me not having a GPU to play games over Christmas, so the ****** Rep let me choose any brand new GTX 980 of my choice for the cost of the reference card with 20% off. Good customer service back then from ******, a lot of things have changed since then, probally due to the amount of money they are losing due to fraud/dishonest people.

Whatever the item is in recent years, it's a struggle to get ****** to be responsible for RMA after 30 days have surpassed for faulty broken items from wear and tear, you will get passed from pillar to post claiming its the manufacturers responsability, a big example hardware wise would be ASUS products. I get a lot of vouchers come my way, so whenever I use them, I make sure I order any product I know I can deal direct with the manufacturer, even if its something for the kitchen as example.

Makes sense to purchase from Overclockers UK when you can when it comes to hardware, because at least you know they will handle RMA's in decent, professional manner.

I don't think I got scammed, but I did pickup a retro P4 machine on Marketplace, don't think the guy who sold it to me knew what it was, but it turned out to be a fake motherboard. Took me ages to find out what it was, no documentation to be found anywhere, even the AGP slot was fake! IT was a copy of an ASRock motherboard but really bad

by fake you mean a not real motherboard? or a cheaper lower end motherboard faked to make look like a higher end model that kinda fake? as in a non functional dummy board that just looks like a motherboard but is more of a prop?
either way thats wow!

It was a cheaper lower end motherboard made to look like a legitimate one, everything functioned mostly, but it had issues with IRQ's especially I really struggled getting a sound card to work with it. The AGP slot was really a PCI slot, so took a PCI IRQ, but the slot itself was a regular AGP so you plugged an AGP card into it. Its when I learned the AGP was basically an updated PCI but it was backwards compatible so the video cards still worked. Was a total spin out I can tell ya!

@junpit was scammed trying to sell a 5090, if that helps?
Threads shaping up to be thread of the year, story wise:

Really?
He sold a card on eBay.
Buyer took to a shop to install.
They said it was faulty.
He got it back and it was fine
~fin

I'm going to sell this to Netflix.

Netflix wont buy that, he didn't turn out to be gay or identify as a tumbledryer, nor find out he's a different race and his Nan turns out to be his Dad!

Plus they haven't got the budget for Pedro Pascal!

On a side note, how the hell have you got 2,000 posts since June. Go touch that grass man!

Simple, I don't have FB/Insta/X, so instead, I choose to spend my time on here, versus there :)
I figure it's better to be chatting to some geeks ;) than doomscrolling fake lifestyle feeds and adverts for BS I couldn't care less about.
TBF if you do the math, 4 months is what 120 days, 2000 posts divided by 120, is 16.6 posts a day? I'd say that's not a lot in the real world, versus people that spend a third on their day on FB etc.

Agreed tbh. I don't touch social media either apart from Facebook, but even that's only for photos and stuff with family/close friends so barely use it. Better to chat on a forum like this where we all have similar interests.

That being said, looking at deviation's post count, I need to up my game significantly!

I don't see the need to use FB for that TBH, when you can simply share photos to groups of family/friends via iMessage/WhatsApp.

I'd stay out of general then if you don't want to see about fake lifestyles.
There's some interesting people in there :P
Lots of wannabe politicians too ;)

Remember though, if you argue in a thread for 50+ pages going round in cricles, it'll suddenly put an end to a war in another country/change a law in parliament/bring back the death penalty etc, instantly!

I don't really share stuff on there myself tbh. It's more to see stuff from the wider family or friends, as not all of the family want to be in WhatsApp groups and things, but yeah I do agree with you.

I'd already bought a 7800 for my son's recently built, before changing my mind, and getting him a 9800 instead. I wanted the sticker out of the 78000 box, so I opened it to inspect the CPU, and take the sticker for his old build that is soon to be sold
it's a bloody good job I checked the CPU, because it was missing a contact pad, never seen that before!
this was a third-party seller, so I am wondering if they tried to palm off one of a bad batch to me. I guess that Amazon will have that recorded now, so if they try it too many times, they will be struck off.
I'd bought this 7800 with part wallet balance, £299, and part cash, totaling £316.
After sending it back, it was taking an age to be processed once it reached the depot.
£316 is a lot of money to be waiting around for, so I kept on at amazon every day until I found a sympathetic CS rep who refunded the total amount into my wallet
I'll only ever buy an item if it is sold and fulfilled by Amazon now, because they refund me as soon as I post an item, and it gets recorded at the point of posting, Maybe they like me, idk
hats off once again to Amazon though; but I think that avoiding 3rd party sellers is best for the time being.

Only got scammed on a ps5 as they had already been out awhile, but were probably still hard to get. I got 2 x 24 packs of coke zero :cry:. Obviously refused it and sent it back. got my money back and went to Game.

That being said, i am surprised ive not been scammed with the amount of pc parts turning up in their original box for all to see. not only can people see what the item is, the labels ruin the boxes. I did think i got a used B760M motherboard a few months ago, but all checked out and was fine.

Its not just pc parts, apple products and home cinema stuff can be scammed or just sent in the original box. Ive never had the chance to work at Amazon, but theres no excuse not to use their own boxes for everything.

Like ebay, you should be protected and can claim/get refunds if there are any issues.
