*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

It me that's got the bitter pill to swallow. He's not the one paying to replace it. :D

It's not bitter if you...'accidentally' borrow it now and then ;)

Edit: Just to add more context to this, I've got everything else (Series X x2, PS5 Pro, PC, Steam Deck OLED), and the Switch 2 still gets playtime.
It still has the fantastic hybrid functionality of the first console, that is, despite the efforts of many, still more seamless than even SteamOS; and Nintendo has not abandoned having fantastic exclusives that just aren't available elsewhere. On top of that, there's a fantastic library of Switch 1 titles, many of which are now available cheaply second hand, many of which run noticeably better on Switch 2, even without dedicated patches.

Even the much lambasted Pokemon ZA is still a fun, and welcome step forward for the series, which shows that SOMEONE at Gamefreak IS trying to move the series forward, even if they're plagued by underinvestment, critically understaffed, and given critically short development cycles by management (given Gamefreak develop and make the Pokemon games, not Nintendo); and it's just not available legitimately elsewhere; not that the title SHOULDN'T look better, and be substantially technically further forward than it is, and probably a decent chunk larger, but at the same time it looks very clean and smooth in ~4K60 on Switch 2 on a 65" OLED, which is a marked transition to any Switch 1 era Pokemon title. In fact I wish they'd release a 1080p/4K60 Switch 2 patch for Arceus, as that'd look fantastic at higher resolution and framerate.

Ultimately what I'm trying to say is, that having a Switch 2 in the household is no bad thing, especially if you put the dock (and make sure it gets docked) somewhere where you can use the system when he isn't :)

Ok, well I might not see my wife much in January...
They just announced a Switch 2 upgrade for Animal Crossing New Horizon, including new content.

She spent hundreds of hours on the game, across two islands on two switches...and now she gets to start again in higher resolution and framerate!

It does unfortunately mean we probably aren't seeing a new Animal Crossing anytime soon.

Oh, I'm definitely getting the upgrade pack for that.

For others it comes out on the 15th of January.

I got the Hitman collection for it, game key cards seem to have all the negatives of Digital with all the negatives of having the game on the cart but doesn't balance it out with many benefits, for example you need to wait for the cart to be delivered and then you need to download it. (hitman is 100gig :( )

Its a pity as Hitman has been really good so far but they released a patch and now I need to download it all again

Bought my first game key card by mistake. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Remake.

Why mistake?

Unless Nintendo changes something it's believed most physical games on the switch 2 will be game keys

This is because the Switch 2 cards have two major issues:

1) They have very small capacities and a lot of AAA games can run on the Switch 2 but they can't fit on the card

2) The Switch 2's cards have a fairly slow transfer speed, a lot of AAA games were designed for the Xbox and PS5 which have transfer speeds several times faster and so these games don't run properly when streaming them off a switch 2 cart and developers are forced to make them digital

Mistake was probably the wrong word. Unexpected is more in line.

It is the first Switch game that I have bought which is a key card so was a little surprised. Most of my games are physical so I kinda forget key cards existed.

It's better than the alternative which is digital for a game you'll probably only play once and can't then sell, or Switch 1 version with no upgrade available.

I think 3) might be that the cards with storage are significantly more expensive to produce compared to discs, so 3rd parties can make more profit with GKC's.

Actually, the issue is they only have one card with 64GB storage space. With compression many games on S2 are much smaller in size and could fit on a 32Gb ( or less ) if they existed.

It’s almost like they should have thought of this as part of the development process before releasing a new console, rather than doing a Nintendo and skimping on it all and expecting everyone to just foot the bill.

I’m not sure how that any different to a disk you’d buy for a PlayStation - you have to ‘install’ games on them these days because disk read speeds are too low and the data is heavily compressed to fit it on the disk.

From what I see it's mainly Nintendo man children moaning because feel it ruins their collections, but usually under the guise of 'game preservation'.
My confirmation bias tells me Nintendo fans are generally the worst of the bunch.

It's not so much that as a problem and more the fact that digital / game key cards take up more space on your storage. 256GB doesn't last long and a 512GB SD Express card costs about £100. I tend to buy physical because it takes up less space.

I am really hoping by this time next year, SD Express card costs will have come down; as I can't imagine games won't get any larger over the lifespan of the console, and the stuff I've installed has already pretty much filled my SD Card, albeit I've not transfered much directly to the console storage atm.

There are a few games coming out now I'd like to pick up, so I think I'm going to need to start juggling capacity fairly soon.
