I'm thought about getting a wheel and pedals for some time but never took the plunge, but with Black Friday coming up may keep an eye on prices.

I believe the Logitech G29/G920 used to be the go to beginner wheel - is that still the case, or is there anything better around the same price point?

I don't have any specific games in mind just now, but would like to look into racing games (forza/f1/iracing?) along with euro truck sim.

Go for a starter direct drive set-up instead, they are a considerable upgrade over non direct drive kits.

Like this one :

The Logitech wheel sets are more than enough to begin your sim journey, plus there's lots of mods around which could prolong their use. I had one a short period of time but with force feedback they don't half make a racket as it's belt driven, so admittedly I had to sell mine up as it was waking kids up at night.

I now have a MOZA R5 kit which arguably is overkill for what I need it for, but it's a little bit more than the R3. I've no experience of the R3 but with it being Direct Drive I would always recommend that over belt drive.

If you opt for Logitech, check the used market - there is almost always an infinite amount available to pick one up on the cheap.

Lastly if you're looking to use the MOZA on a Playstation 5 for example, I've got the Ras1ution adapter which is fantastic and would recommend picking one of those up too. R3 should natively work with Xbox.

Try to pick up a local Logitech G29/G920 on Gumtree or Marketplace for £100 if you can. You’ll still get your money back whether you decide to upgrade or just pack it in.

G920 is on various deals at the moment. I picked one up today for £199 bundled with an Astro A10 headset. Edit - didn't want the headset but the one without it was £249.....

Seems reasonable once you dial down the force feedback a bit.

It's a very decent starter set. It's how I started.

The hardware is fine. The software (as is usual with Logitech) is a bug-ridden pile of crap.

Ended up writing a script to kill the Logitech processes every time the wheel is unplugged otherwise probably 50% of the time GHub just hangs when you plug it back in. Bug is related to sleep states but I can't be arsed finding out why. Killing all the Logitech crap and restarting it only when the wheel is plugged back in is simpler.

That's unfortunate. Can't say I had any issues with it. In fact, it's still running on my system as I have a Logitech BT KB attached.

There's hundreds of results for "ghub hangs" so its pretty much endemic. I suspect your BT keyboard isn't affected by sleep/low power states as you probably use it to wake the PC.

Over the years I've generally found Logitech hardware works much better if you disable/uninstall all of their s/w bloat. Not an option with the wheel on Win11 though...

Thanks all.

Thanks that's something I hadn't considered - I'll be using it later at night when partner is trying to sleep so I'll need to have a look around and see what the noise is like and may be what forces me to go with the likes of the R3.

The Logitech wheel is good value, but it is very noisy/rattly. A direct drive wheel is absolutely silent, and night and day difference in how good it feels.

Its certainly noisy - how much depends on what you mount it on. Direct to desk isn't so good, rubber pads added underneath wheel/clamps and its a lot better.

Another gotcha is the cable exit point on the pedal assembly, which is at the rear. If the assembly ends up moving (it will, even with the carpet gripper) and gets pushed against something else (like skirting board) then the cable will be compressed against the case at a 90 degree angle and its only a matter of time till that goes. More tape and rubber pads...

Fun enough to drive though :)
