CPU comes out of motherboard too easily

Hi, I was changing some M2 drives around on the mobo and after putting the CPU cooler back noticed an issue and needed to remove it to check something.
It is an amd CPU that drops into the motherboard slot and is then secured in place with a lever / latch.

My issue is that when the CPU cooler was removed, the CPU was stuck to the base of the cooler and placing it back and then the lever had no effect.

The PC does not boot but could this be down to the cpu problem above ?

The GPU is very old and was trying to work out if there is likely to be an issue with the motherboard or CPU.
 
@steveliddle: yeah, that’s a classic one, mate. When you pull the cooler and the CPU comes along for the ride – usually the thermal paste glued them together. Check the pins, make sure none bent, clean both surfaces and reseat it gently. Don’t force it, just drop it in and lock.
 
Hi All, been stuck on a low end linux laptop and the mobile phone. Currently setting up the pinnacle laptop.

The locking bar had no effect and the cpu came up with the cpu cooler, it was rather fresh paste.
Have taken photos of the unpack for the laptop and will do some close ups of the old pc with the possibly kaput cpu.

ironically if I had simply orverwritten win 10 with 11, would not be on the laptop.

This is a common occurrence on AM4 and why I stopped using cryonaut as it welds the CPU to the cool once it drys out, as @aaronyuri says, your best bet is twisting while keeping some pressure down on the cooler to stop the chip from lifting.

My CPU was so stuck when it came out glued onto the cooler than it took 10 minutes to carefully removed with some paste remover and sawing with dental floss.

RIP one of those things that is anecdotally quite common but you wouldn't know or be warned about unless you frequent this type of forum.
 
I'm confused, when you pulled the cooler off, it took the socket clamp mechanism with it?

I mean yes there's some sucktion sometimes, hence 'twist, then pull' is good advice, but to wreck a socket would require some decent force, i'd imagine enough force to lift the whole PC off the ground by the cooler, unless the socket/clamp was already loose/damaged?

Ive done the above before and removed plenty of cpus, it didn't take much force at all.

As have I, and I don't recal ever pulling a socket mech off...I have encountered slighty stuck ones due to the paste basicaly turning into glue, but thats when you twist and squiggle the cooler plate before just janking it off.

Am4 socket doesn't have any mechanical retention, solely relies on friction between the cpu pins the lands in the socket and the socket cover, not much surprise they can be pulled out.

Maybe my AM4 is a special edition just for me, with a socket spring/retainer clip? I must be special I guess/ hahah

It has a lock mech, when you drop the CPU in 'loose', you tighten it into the socket by way of a mechanism on the side of the socket.

The Socket leaver? all it does is shift the socket cover slightly to push the cpu pins in to the socket lands providing a bit of friction.
yeas, exactly that.

EDIT, it sounds like the OP has ripped off the whole top of the socket though, it's hard to say what they have done without any pics.
